SA and SSA songs on the theme of Harvest Time and ThanksgivingDate: June 6, 2013 Views: 310
Hello friends! I am programming for a collegiate women's ensemble, mostly Fresh. and Soph., on the theme of "Harvest Time and Thanksgiving". I have come up with several ideas and pieces but would like to see what everyone else thinks up. Send your top five (or more). Thanks!

My arrangement of "All Glory, Laud and Honor" to the tune of Holt's Thaxted (Jupiter from the Planets) has been popular with a number of choirs for Thanksgiving, and is easily adapted for Treble voices: http://choirworks.com/index.php/satb/thanksgiving-1/allglorylaudandhonor
Also, I'd be glad to adapt my works specifically written for Thanksgiving to SSA, just let me know and I can send you a PDF:

John Rutter's "For the Beauty of the Earth" comes to mine. It's in SA, easy to put together quickly and absolutely beautiful.

Hi Jason:
Here is a possible outlier for a Thanksgiving program. It is "Leave the Turkey in the Straw", a jazzy 5/4 parody of Turkey in the Straw. The original lyrics are written from the point of view of the turkey, pleading against its yearly slaughter. The setting for SA and piano has a couple of measures of divisi in the S part, but is quite easy. The piece runs a bit under 6 minutes.
Let me know if you want to receive a perusal copy and an mp3 of the finale play-out.

Jason,
I have a beautiful work for SSA and piano - Song of Thanksgiving published by Lighthouse Music Publications. http://lighthousemusicpublications.com/catalogue/choral_works/ssa_choral_works/song-of-thanksgiving-lmp-c1.html
Keywords for the text are: autumn, orchard, fruit trees, breath, wind, golden leaves falling, coins stamped ancient design, spoils, summer, drank from the wind, harvester's wagon, wealth of a bountiful land. I can send you a midi mp3 if you are interested. The text is by Dr. Robert J. Smithdas, deaf/blind since the age of 5 and retired from the Helen Keller National Center. His texts are amazing!
Good luck,
Rick

Gustav Holst's Song of the Corn (Galaxy/ECS) is little known but would fit your needs very well.
Hope this hleps,

Hi Jason,
I've done a new setting of 'All good gifts' ('We plough the fields') in 'popular' style, details of which which I was thinking of posting on ChoralNet. it is partly in unison with SATB sections, with piano accompaniment, but I could easily adapt it for SSA if you were interested. I've performed it with my chamber choir with some optional audience participation (in the refrains). Let me know if you'd like to see or hear it. (I wouldn't expect any payment if you wanted to use it!)
Best wishes,
Gordon

Take a look at "All Things Bight and Beautiful" arr. Mack Wilberg (Oxford), Rutter's arrangment of the same traditional hymn tune, and "Morning Has Broken" (opt. harp accomp.) published by Hinshaw.

Jason, there is the SA All things bright and beautiful by Philip Stopford [published by Hal Leonard]. The SATB version is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqmQ2dlGLyA&feature=related
