Coro Città di Firenze
Date: February 9, 2014
Category: Other Choirs
Location: Florence, Italy
Formerly "Coro Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze".
The choir was founded in 1996 on an amateur basis, with 15/20 participants: it has grown to about 75 volunteer members, including many musicians, who now sing at a good semi-professional level. It is directed by Maestro Ennio Clari, who has worked for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino choir and other choral ensembles in Florence and Tuscany.
The repertoire is mainly classical, both secular and sacred, and is usually performed with orchestra accompaniment: besides italian, french and russian opera it includes main works as Charpentier Te Deum, Vivaldi Credo and Gloria, Mozart Krönungsmesse, Requiem, Händel Messiah, Borodin Polovetsian Dances, Verdi Requiem, Orff Carmina Burana, Fauré Requiem, Puccini Messa di Gloria ect. and selections of early to modern and contemporary music. All is sung in its original language.
Last december the choir has premiered Cantata "Alla Gioja", composed by Pietro Mascagni at the age of 17 : the score was thought lost, then recently a piano transcription by the composer himself was eventually purchased by his descendants at an auction. Lyrics are an italian translation of Schiller's "An die Freude"; it is quite an awesome work, featuring soprano, tenor, baritone and bass soloists as well. The concert was recorded, and the live CD is to be distributed by Naxos.
See parts of the Verdi Requiem, performed with Corale Quadriclavio from Bologna, at Tuscia Opera Festival, last summer, in the beautiful setting of the historical city of Viterbo; the Conductor was Stefano Vignati, founder and Artistic Director of the Italian American Opera Foundation
