The Greater Baton Rouge Children’s Chorus (501)(c)(3) was founded in 1997 by Jennifer Ellis, then a middle school choral director/ voice teacher and Russ and Karen Porter, Ministers of Music at First Baptist Church and previously affiliated with Houston Children’s Chorus. Recognizing the absence of a community children’s chorus in our capitol city, GBRCC was incorporated with a mission to unite children from the area through choral education, regardless of race, religion, economic status, or school affiliation, and nurturing self-discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and self-confidence in its singers. In August 1997, open auditions were held, and 55 children joined the ensemble.
For the last seventeen years GBRCC has conducted free, open auditions annually, and to date has educated over 500 local choristers. Its diverse singers represent public, private, and home schools in Baton Rouge and its surrounding communities .
GBRCC is known for its eclectic programming, performing a wide range of musical styles including classical, jazz, world music, and musical theater. GBRCC has performed with Baton Rouge Symphony, Baton Rouge Ballet, Of Moving Colors, Opera Louisiane, Baton Rouge Little Theater, and Louisiana Sinfonietta. GBRCC also collaborates with local performing artists and nationally acclaimed composers, showcasing their talents and premiering their work.
