Collegium Singers Concert - Bach, Family & Friends - 5th July 2014 South Petherton, South West England

Location: England, United Kingdom
Choir type: Chamber Choirs and Vocal Ensembles
Voicing: Mixed
With 'Bach, Family & Friends' Collegium Singers maintain their reputation for offering audiences in the Taunton area an innovative mixture of traditional and lesser known choral repertoire.

With the great Johann Sebastian Bach motet Lobet den Herrn and Lutheran masses by Buxtehude and Telemann as centrepieces, the concert will also celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Gottfied August Homilius in 1714.

Not exactly a household name (though he certainly should be!), Homilius was born at Rosenthal, Saxony, and attended Leipzig University as a law student in the 1730s, at the same time that J.S. Bach was based at the Thomaskirche.

A talented organist, Homilius studied with Bach and later gained a post as organist at the Frauenkirche, Dresden (illustrated overleaf) in 1742. In 1755 he became Cantor at the Kreuzkirche, Dresden, one of the most prestigious posts in one of the most famous musical cities in Europe.

Homilius' motets are energetic, passionate works. In their day they were widely known in German lands, yet, like the works of many of his contemporaries, soon forgotten after his death. This concert aims to help restore him to his rightful status with a selection of German high baroque choral works that will stimulate the senses and broaden the mind.

Concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets on the door or on line through our web site www.collegiumsingers.org.uk
