Choral Scholar vacancies - Calvary Episcopal Church, Louisville, KY

Location: Louisville, Kentucky, USA
The Calvary Episcopal Church Parish Choir is a mixed adult ensemble which sings on Sundays for the 11:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist and monthly 5:00 p.m. Choral Evensongs during the academic year (September – June).  There are additional services and concerts at Christmas, Holy Week and Easter, and other times as announced.  There is a two hour Wednesday evening rehearsal and pre-service rehearsals on Sundays.  Occasional extra rehearsals may be called; a full schedule is provided at the beginning of the academic year.
Section Leaders will provide the professional core of the Calvary Parish Choir and will also occasionally function alone as the Calvary Choral Scholars.  Section Leaders are expected to provide a model of musical and professional excellence in the choral arts and dedicated ministry to the parish community.  Remuneration will be set at $50.00 per call.
Expectations of Calvary Section Leaders:
  • Leadership skills with pastoral sensitivity.
  • Attendance at all scheduled rehearsals and performances.  For any unavoidable absences during the academic year, the Section Leader will be asked to work with the Director of Music to find a competent substitute, if needed.
  • Punctuality is mandatory, and section leaders are expected to arrive ten minutes before the scheduled start of each appearance.
  • Exceptional sight-singing and quick learning skills.
  • Strong vocal technique and musical expression.
  • Exceptional intonation.
  • Ability to blend vowels and color.
  • Ability to sing in English and Latin, as well as other languages, as necessary.
  • Knowledge of IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) is desirable.
  • Ability to interpret various stylistic and historical performance practices.
  • Independence of voice-part.
  • To prepare music in advance of all rehearsals.
  • To assist in the vocal training of the choir (primarily by example).
  • To serve as soloist and/or cantor as mutually agreed with the Director of Music.
  • To maintain professional competence through regular practice, study, and performance.
