Companion piece

Dear colleagues,

I am looking for a piece to pair with Whitacre's Seal Lullaby for a performance this fall.  I would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks. W. Hinson

How about La Biche by Paul Hindemith?

I programmed "Seal Lullaby" this spring with 2 Whitacre pieces from The City and the Sea: "as is the sea marvelous" and "maggie and millly and molly and may" with texts by e.e cummings. They were very popular with both the choir and the audience.

Contact John Muehleisen about his piece "Tides of Peace" which was commissioned by the Bainbridge Chorale, a community choir I direct.  It might suit your needs.  Here is his email.  johnmueh(a)comcast.net.

Also, he was incrdible to work with on this project for those of you looking to commission a work...

The text is the 10th Poem in Heny VanDyke's cycle titled MUSIC.

X.  SEA AND SHORE
Music, I yield to thee;
As swimmer to the sea
I give my Spirit to the flood of song:
Bear me upon thy breast
In rapture and at rest,
Bathe me in pure delight and make me strong;
From strife and struggle bring release,
And draw the waves of passion into tides of peace.
Remember'd songs, most dear,
In living songs I hear,
While blending voices gently swing and sway
In melodies of love,
Whose mighty currents move,
With singing near and singing far away;
Sweet in the glow of morning light,
And sweeter still across the starlit gulf of night.
Music, in thee we float,
And lose the lonely note
Of self in thy celestial-ordered strain,
Until at last we find
The life to love resigned
In harmony of joy restored again;
And songs that cheered our mortal days
Break on the coast of light in endless hymns of praise.

I have an SATB piece that might work for you:  Peace is a Sea

The entire poem, by Ella Bat T'zion, trans by Barbara Goldberg is
'Peace is a sea
Whose waves will carry you far.'

It is one of the four of my Songs of War and Peace. If you would like to take a look/listen, just let me know.

Best,
