Section Leaders: To vote or not to vote?

I would like to employ leadership in all my high school choir classes. Thinking about appointing a President and then electing other officers out of he top group, which would do work for the entire program. Section leaders out of the two other choirs. Debating - should I appoint the section leaders? If they vote they tend to choose their friends. But if I choose all, they don't gain the ownership. Thoughts?

Sarah,

I would opt for you selecting the section leaders. Even at the college level students tend to select those whom they like over who's actually best-qualified. I place a great deal of responsibility on my section leaders (far more so than my choral officers), and I need my most talented and responsible students for the position.

Hi Sarah,

Our leadership structure has different positions being appointed or voted in depending on the position. I appoint section leaders. Our section leaders have to have the skills to detect and communicate musical issues, and the maturity to be role models. I just don't want to leave this in the hands of at-large voting. Some of our other positions are by vote, but candidates are selected by a nominating committee first. The nominating committee is generally made of past choir leaders and myself. I would be happy to send you our by-laws if you are interested. BTW, the choirs I lead are at the community college level.

I ask my kids to nominate students they feel would be the best section leaders, and they know that I will then choose. So far, they've always chosen the same people I would choose so we all win!
