The Apollo Club of Boston, Inc. founded in 1871 and the second oldest continuously active men's singing group in the United States, is seeking a Conductor beginning its 145th Season, September 2015.  The Club is both a musical and social organization composed of amateur, non-auditioned singers. Our members number approximately 30 Boston-area business and professional men and we rehearse in a beautiful space at the foot of Boston's Beacon Hill.
The Club performs throughout greater Boston, with rehearsals and concerts usually on Tuesday evenings. Our purpose is simple: to promote musical literacy and an appreciation of the art of men's choral music, and to share with our audiences the pleasure of men's voices singing songs old and new. Our repertoire includes folk songs, love songs, show tunes, sea chanteys, and selections from classical and semi-classical music. The Conductor shall (i) in consultation with the Committee on Music and the Librarian decide upon program music appropriate to a four part male chorus accompanied by piano or a cappella; (ii) prepare the members to perform; and (iii) conduct Apollo Club performances.
The Conductor position for the Apollo Club is part-time with two hour, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, rehearsals plus preparation time, for approximate one hour program performances, with rehearsals and performances scheduled usually on Tuesday evenings from the beginning of September to the second week of June.  In recent years there have been approximately 40 scheduled rehearsals and performances, including three public concerts and twenty private and civic performances. Applicants should possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s or higher degree in a related field
5 plus years of experience with vocal instruction and conducting
Good communication skills
Good organizational skills
Good interpersonal skills
Keyboard competency
The Conductor position is for ten months each year, beginning in September 2015.  Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and is in the range of $8,500 plus, paid in ten monthly installments.  The Conductor's engagement with the Apollo Club will be as an independent contractor for tax and employment law purposes with no fringe or employee benefits provided. The position is renewable annually subject to mutual agreement.
