Britten uses vast forces – a full symphony orchestra and chorus, a chamber orchestra, three soloists and boys’ choir – and a powerful synthesis of Wilfred Owen’s poetry and the traditional Latin Requiem Mass to create a biting commentary on the futility of war fitting for Remembrance weekend in the centenary year of the start of the Great War. The Newcastle Bach Choir is joined by young musicians from Newcastle University, world-renowned baritone Sir Thomas Allen, Newcastle alumnus Robert Murray and Samling Scholar Kate Valentine.
