I'm looking for a curriculum of some sort that starts at the beginning teaching high school aged kids how to read music using solfege. My kiddos know the scales, but they don't know how to apply the concept of tonality to their music-reading/sight-singing. Shoutout to my Kodaly peeps in the house! ... See MoreSee Less

William ZinnCreate your own from your literature. They know solfege. Place movable "do" at given tonic. Spell scale degrees in parallel with actual pitch names. (i.e. do=C, therefore sol=G) la minor teaches relative keys and simplifies reading.

Andrew Thomas BirlingI loved the little folk-song sight singing series we used in college.

Bonnie Irwin AtkinsonI just purchased a 12 month subscription to a really fantastic site for $23.51 US. (It's $30 AUD). It has a pretty cool demo so you get an idea of what it's like. You can click and see the solfege above the notes, or just the first note, or note names, or nothing. Comes with a built in optional metronome and/or piano playing the tones. It's going to be awesome on the big screen in my classroom! Can't wait to use from 3rd grade all the way to High School Chorus!!!

Kenny Wisercreative Sightsinging by Bowyer is a really great text book. You can purchase it from Santa Barbara . Digital license for your school can be purchased in place of physical copies of the book. I love it!

Kayla Miles AbernathySmart Music and Sightreading Factory. Also Stan McGill has Sightreading books that you can copy pages and hand out or use for projection.

Vanessa Davis NormanOne-Minute Sight-reading (Slabbinicks). Solfeggio with hand signs included. Only covers the keys of C, F and G, though. Six units - thorough.

Nicholas Drew GrayGood luck finding something comprehensive that fits your needs in a progression that you're comfortable with. I'm not happy with anything I've seen by itself. I isolate rhythms first with sight chanting while separately familiariIng then with the solfege syllables and building the diatonic major scale degrees in their ears through various exercises. I start to throw in leaps and show them how to find the difficult (fa,la) in relation to the anchor notes (do, sol) with hand sign sight singing. I then have some very old flashcards with solfege written sequences up and down the scale side by side with the pitches desired to be sung circled. Once familiar with the staff, I write solfege into the Resplendent Rounds by masterworks press. I have them write in solfege on future rounds. These are all stepwise increase in rhythmic difficulty and are extremely versatile. That's how I get a good start to rehearsing music without piano and on solfege with my groups. If you do find a simpler system in one resource be sure to let me know about it.
