I'm educating my administration about finances needed to hire an accompanist for dress rehearsals and concerts. I have asked them to provide $100/dress rehearsal and $150/concert (each event about 3 hours long). This is likely on the low side of going rates, and of course, this feels high to my administration. Can anyone point me to resources about going rates that I could share with my administration? Our school is located near a major northeastern city. Thank you! ... See MoreSee Less

Betsy Baeskens GiriSnarky and not too helpful probably, but can't resist: what do they pay their football staff that serves in an accompanying role?

Judith HirschI second Lucyanne. The union and also AGO (American Guild of Organists) can give you and idea of appropriate rates.

Philip BrownYou get what you pay for - are they willing to invest a little more for a better quality experience for be students? Or are they ok with paying less for someone who might not be as skilled?

Erick J. FiguerasThose are the rates we pay in my area of SC for dress and concert. Daily rehearsals are $25/hr. When I taught in NY 13 years ago it was higher.

Ann DuBoseI fought this battle and lost. I got a little money to pay a very talented former student to play for the first year at my new school. $100 for dress rehearsal and concert. (This is a true bargain in my DC suburb. I got quotes from other former students for 3X as much and the school contracted accompanist's charge $35/hour.) This year I was asked to use volunteers or make a trade for another teacher's services. Only two problems making a trade...I'm a vocalist so I have very little of useful value to trade, and other teachers aren't available for daytime rehearsals/assemblies, which is all I can have at my elementary school. The problem with volunteers, you get what you pay for. If you're successful, I would love for you to share your tactics and research.

Judy DuBoseAre other teachers allowed to collect fees for materials, like for labs? Would admin allow a fee to hire accompanist's? Depending on the size of the chorus it could be as little as $2-5. Or could you have a parent booster organization that could do one or two fundraisers? Maybe piano teachers who want to expand their student base would write it off as advertising.

The ACDA Honor Choir made up of the top high school singers from all across the U.S. came together in Washington, D.C. for three days of rehearsals, sightseeing, and a sold-out concert in Old Town Alexandria before departing on a concert tour of Prague, Salzburg, and Vienna. All of the concert venues were at full capacity and people were turned away at both the kick-off concert in Alexandria and at the first concert in Prague! Other highlights include a wonderful exchange with a school just outside of Salzburg, impromptu singing at various sights along the Sound of Music Tour, and a workshop and concert with Insingizi, a trio from Zimbabwe based in Vienna. Post-tour communication with ACDA include reports of strong friendships forged during the tour and plans for choir members to reconnect at upcoming regional conferences.
