Saturday, March 25, 4:00pm-5:00pm, Palo Alto
MORE INFO: http://www.gracepa.org
The three congregations in Palo Alto of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America– Grace Lutheran, First Lutheran and University Lutheran– will be joining forces for a Bach Cantata Vespers in March. Soloists will include Angelique Zuluaga, Mark Tendall, Allen Simon, Lucik Aprahamian, Kristi Schneck, and Mark Rubin. The choirs will be accompanied by an orchestra of strings, oboes, and organ, under the direction of Lucik Aprahamian, Bill Walker, and Tim Getz. Organists will be Jin Kyung Lim and Tim Getz. Since the vast majority of the vocal music by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was written for liturgical use, the music will be presented in the context of a service of Evening Prayer.
Bach’s cantatas, written to be performed every week in his church in Leipzig, Germany, provided commentary on the Gospel reading appointed for each Sunday. The cantata our choirs will sing is #23, Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn (You the True God and Son of David), first performed in Leipzig in February, 1723. The Gospel for that day was Luke 18:31-43, Jesus’ healing of a blind man in Jericho. We will use that Gospel at our Evening Prayer service, and the next morning at our regular services we will hear another story of a blind man’s healing, John 9:1-41. Bach’s cantatas often conclude with a hymn that would have been familiar to his congregation, and the last movement of this cantata is a setting of the German Agnus Dei, Christe, du Lamm Gottes.
The service will also include a Magnificat attributed to Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707, an important precursor to Bach), and unaccompanied anthems by Jean Berger (1909-2002) and Ola Gjeilo (born 1978).
