Concert: A Tribute to Robert Shaw
First Parish, 353 Great Rd., Stow, MA
The 43rd annual Springfest Concert given by the Sounds of Stow Chorus and members of the Sounds of Stow Orchestra is dedicated to the great American musician Robert Shaw, as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. No one else has contributed as much to the growth of choral singing in America. His research into American folk music and spirituals, and his work with Alice Parker helped create a vast repertoire of American choral music we have today.
The Stow Chorus under the direction of Barbara Jones will present selections from the Parker/Shaw collaboration that serve as representatives of their contributions to our choral tradition today. Stephen Teichgraeber will read witty and insightful excerpts from Robert Shaw’s letters to his singers. Instrumental selections by local musicians will fill out the program. These include the highly accomplished ninth grade pianist Katie Painter, and flutists Katherine Kleitz and Jennifer Ciapella, all from Stow.
The concert will be held at 4:00 on Sunday, May 15 at the First Parish Church in Stow center (junctions of Rts 117 and 62). Admission: $10 for adults and $5 for children 18 and under.
Sounds of Stow is supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council as administered by the local cultural councils of Stow, Acton-Boxborough, Bolton and Hudson.
