WomenSing’s holiday concert features songs that reflect seasonal joy and offer comfort in the face of global unrest. Highlights include Jessica Locke’s Reading of the Names: The Firefighters, written in honor of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, and the world premiere of Kirstina Rasmussen Collins’ How Can I Keep From Singing? specially written for WomenSing. Complementing these pieces will be works by Rheinberger, Glick, Rutter, and an eclectic mix of lyrical, lively, and immortal English Christmas carols, including a dash of Pentatonix arrangements.
These concerts will feature a procession to honor Santa Lucia, whose feast day is in mid-December, complete with a wreath of candles, as celebrated in Sweden and Italy. Srul Irvin Glick’s Psalm 47 and Psalm 23 contrast the calm meditation and the joy these psalms have offered through the ages. Reading of the Names: The Firefighters and How Can I Keep From Singing? simultaneously honor bravery in the face of hardship and provide comfort for a time of uncertainty. Music has always been integral to the holiday season. How can we keep from singing?
