Vienna Philharmonic & State Opera Chorus
Sir Georg Solti
Franz Schubert: Ave Maria, D. 839
New Philharmonia Orchestra; Ambrosian Singers, Richard Bonynge
Joan Sutherland, soprano
I am covering two bases with this much-loved hymn “Be Thou my vision”. First of all, it was St. Patrick’s Day last Friday. This hymn with its Irish folk melody as its tune seems appropriate. And on Cinema Classics Weekend here at WCPE we note that this tune was heard in the movie “A River Runs Through It” (1991). The Lacrimosa from Mozart’s Requiem was heard appropriately enough in the 1984 film “Amadeus”. Schubert’s “Ave Maria” was in the sound track of several movies including “Needful Things” (1993), “Gods and Monsters” (1998), and “Chicken Run” (2000).
Olivier Messiaen: O sacrum convivium

Ennio Morricone: On Earth as it is in Heaven ~ The Mission
Crouch Festival Chorus with the City of Prague Philharmonic
David Temple
Samuel Barber: Agnus Dei
Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, John Scott
Joshua Ross, treble
French composer Olivier Messiaen’s heavenly setting of “O sacred feast” was used in the 1999 movie “Stigmata”. Italian composer Enrico Morricone has written over 500 film scores. “On earth as it is in heaven” comes from “The Mission” (1986). American composer Samuel Barber arranged the Adagio movement of his 1936 string quartet for SATB chorus in 1967. Barber used the text to the “Agnus Dei” portion of the Mass and scored the music in the visually terrifying key of B flat minor. It was heard in “Platoon” (1986) and “Lorenzo’s Oil” (1992).
John Ireland: My song is love unknown
Choir of St. John’s, Elora, Noel Edison
Paul Halley, organ
Gabriel Faure: Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11
Winchester Cathedral Choir, David Hill
Stephen Farr, organ
Composed in 1864-65 at age 19
J.S. Bach: Erbarme dich ~ St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244
Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe
Andreas Scholl, countertenor
Canadian choral conductor Noel Edison (1958-) is conductor of The Elora Singers, Artistic Director of the Elora Festival and the conductor of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. Gabriel Faure wrote his much-loved “Cantique de Jean Racine” at the tender age of 19. It was used in the 1995 film “Babe”. German countertenor Andreas Scholl (1967-) is one of the greatest countertenors of his generation. He appeared at the last night of the BBC Proms in 2005 and has sung in many of the world’s grea opera houses. “Erbarme dich” was heard in the 1964 film “The Gosepl According to Saint Matthew”.
J.S. Bach: Cantata 54, “Widerstehe doch der Sunde”
Hanover Band, Roy Goodman
Nathalie Stutzmann, contralto
The German translates as “Withstand firmly all sin”. This cantata was first performed in Weimar on March 24, 1715.
György Ligeti: Lux aeterna
Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, Timothy Brown
Now for a short legal sidebar: Stanley Kubrick ‘arranged’ several of Ligeti’s compositions for use in his film “2001, A Space Odyssey” without the composer’s permission. When Ligeti found out about his music being used in the film, he sued Kubrick for ‘distorting’ his music. After settling the lawsuit, Kubrick did compensate Ligeti for the use of his music in his later films. Source: Wikipedia.org
Felix Mendelssohn: Magnificat for mixed choir, soloists and organ
Amadeus Choir; Wurttemberg Philharmonic, Nicol Matt
Nathalie Karl, soprano; Barbara Werner, alto;
Robert Morvai, tenor; Manfred Bittner, bass
Mendelssohn admired the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. As a result, works such as his Magnificat in D major for soloists, chorus & orchestra which he wrote at the age of 13, reflect that influence.
Antonio Vivaldi: Stabat Mater, RV 621
Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Jeanne Lamon
Marie-Nicole Lemieux, contralto
French-Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux is widely acclaimed for her interpretations of Baroque music. Vivaldi’s “Stabat Mater” was used in the sound track of “The Talented Mr Ripley” (1999)
Ildebrando Pizzetti: Messa di Requiem
