Forum message: Differentiating in the choir rehearsal
Differentiating...those of us in the fine arts roll our eyes and say we've been differentiating for decades.  Our classes are one big example of differentiation.  Well prove it.  I've started a list of a few ways I differentiate my instruction to reach all of the different learning styles or mu...
Comment: Re: Student Centered Learning in a choir rehearsal??
I am LOVING all of these responses!  Joy, your presentation sounded wonderful...wish I could have been there.  Thanks for taking the time to write.     @ Austin: I would never think of limiting myself to only asking questions.  My students would go crazy!  When asking "Why did I cut you ...
Forum message: Student Centered Learning in a choir rehearsal??
Student Centered Learning (SCL) is touted as an effective way for students to take ownership of their learning experience, develop critical thinking, foster curiosity, and learn problem solving skills.  But student centered learning in a choir rehearsal?  I have always considered myself a benevo...
Comment: Re: Rounding out a contest program.
I've got the perfect piece for you.  I arranged it for my middle school choir and just performed it as an opener for contest last month.  I made it especially for the boys in my choir who all have such different voice ranges.  It's GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO, by Antonio Vivaldi, arr. Catherine DeLa...
Comment: Re: SSA challenging repertoire
I have an SSA piece out with Shawnee Press called the WOOD DOVE that has a story of a woman scorned.  Each part takes the melody at one time or another. Best of luck, Cathy DeLanoy
Comment: Re: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring - arranged for middle school?
I have found that it is very difficult to "arrange" Bach for middle school.  Bach has structured his choral pieces in such a way that if you remove one piece, the structure or integrity of the piece is compromised.  It doesn't mean that I'll stop trying to arrange Bach for middle school 3 pt mx ...
Comment: Re: Counteracting Negativity
Look for songs where the boys have the melody for all or even part of the song.  "Come to Me O My Love" by Allan Petker (Hinshaw Music) immediately springs to mind.  Also the old arrangement of "The Water is Wide".   Several people have mentioned their "no complaining" rule in class and I cou...
Comment: Re: 3 part mixed Sprituals
You might consider Glory, Glory Halleluia!, BriLee in 3 pt or 2 pt...by Catherine DeLanoy :)  - if you're looking for something both heartfelt and upbeat.
Comment: Re: Middle school boys' transition voices
Hi Brian,   I just want to encourage you to do everything you can to have a 6th grade only choir.  When I added 6th grade choir to our curriculum it was WONDERFUL.  I was able to train my students at a slower rate. Since I don't take these kids to contest, the class is oriented toward train...
Comment: Re: Buxtehude's daughter
John - To answer your questions about Bach's children, yes we do.    The following was gleaned from Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Incidently, Bach outlived 11 of his 20 children...many died at or near their birth. The names of those who survived are in bold:   BACH’S CHILDREN...
Comment: Re: looking for a madrigal
Two of my folk songs may fit the bill: The Lark in the Clear Air, Brilee, SSA arr. Catherine DeLanoy The Wood Dove, Shawnee Press, SSA, arr. Catherine DeLanoy

Comment: Re: Fast-paced pieces for mixed choir (4-part) contest
You might consider BEATUS VIR by Claudio Monteverdi arranged for SATB voices by Catherine DeLanoy, Carl Fischer. BEATUS VIR is such a peppy renaissance piece!!
Comment: Re: The Sleigh Bells - a Mexican folksong?
You are wonderful!  Thank you so much for your efforts.  I found this in an old 1960's partner songbook with very little information.  My guess is like yours - a Mexican folk tune was employed but new words AND title were inserted.    If you care to send me your email address, I can send you ...
Comment: Re: The Sleigh Bells - a Mexican folksong?
Thanks, but I checked it and it's not the one I'm looking for. Cathy
Forum message: The Sleigh Bells - a Mexican folksong?
Is anyone familiar with a Mexican folksong called "The Sleigh Bells"? The only lyrics I know of go "Ting-a-ling-a-ling, Ting-a-ling-a-ling, go the little sleighbells".  I need to know if the music and/or lyrics are public domain.  I've been unable to find it on the internet as of yet.

Where can one find these rounds online?

"With a Little Bit of Luck" from MY FAIR LADY.
Comment: Re: Classroom Management in Choral Settings
Angela, Do your students get a participation grade in choir?  If they are talking during rehearsal, they are showing poor participation.  This should bring their grade down each time they disrupt rehearsal.  If you have a seating chart in front of you, record a check mark by the name of offen...
Comment: Re: Classical style piece for middle school
Hi Shaun,   My kids like the "Cantate Deo" Handel as well.  I also try to do at least a few "classical" pieces each year, particularily around contest time.  This year we are doing Gloria from “Heiligmesse" by F.J. Haydn, arr. P. Liebergen (SAB).  For many years we have done Sherri Port...
Comment: Re: "Fun Friday" -- reward day for MS students
We sing from a round book I compiled on Fridays (the kids get to choose which rounds they want to sing), followed by singing from either American Tapestry (6th gr) Irving Berlin-a Century of Song (7th) or 100 Years of Broadway (8th).  We do mostly unison singing from the collection books - this g...
Comment: Re: Repertoire for Middle School Boys
If you are heading to the Illinois IMEA state convention in Peoria (Jan 26-29) I am bringing my select middle school choir for a clinic/demonstration of repertoire for all different types of junior high choirs.  We will perform on Friday the 28th at the RCC auditorium  at 11:00 a.m.  Vijay Sing...
Comment: Re: Music for Jr High mixed choir
Julie is right.  BriLee Music is written specifically for middle school voices.  Brian Busch always insisted on limited ranges and optional baritone parts.
Comment: Re: Middle School Concert Attire
I always have guys and girls wear black pants....that way I don't have to deal with varying skirt levels.  Choir and band students all wear tuxedo shirts bought from the local Michael's or Hobby Lobby store.  The black ties that come with them are worn by the 6th grade choir, royal blue ties are...
Comment: Re: Limited choir access
I am a middle school choir/general music teacher.  I teach 5 choir classes and 1 general music class.  None of my choirs meet outside of the school day.  Choir classes CAN have curricula that is aligned to state standards and therefore replace general music classes that meet during the school d...
