Comment: Re: Hiring ringers for a volunteer church choir
Brad,   To quote Craig: "As cruel as it seems (and I'm prepared to get flamed for this!) this might be the tipping point for your choir going from point A to point B in terms of integrity and future "performance" quality. Having those extra voices, even just once, can create growth within eac...
Forum message: Producing a CD for sale
I am seeking information regarding licensing needed to produce a CD for sale. Having viewed the Harry Fox website, it appears (for certain) we need to obtain a 'mechanical license'. What about permission from the arranger/publisher? Is that yet another 'license' we need to obtain? Example: 'What a...

The Arts Chorale of Winchester will present: "Pop Swing...and a Little Jazz" Sunday afternoon, April 22nd in Armstrong Concert Hall at Shenandoah University. The 4pm. performance will feature Bob Chilcott's 'Little Jazz Mass' and include additional selections by Hoagie Carmichael, Duke Ellington...
Comment: Re: Changing a word
Eddie,   Lot's of discussion going on here...not sure you have a 'clear' answer. I would contact John Ferfuson directly and ask his opinion. ferg@stolaf.edu   Sometimes it is easier to go straight to the horses mouth :-)   Michael Main
Comment: Re: Producing a not for sale promotional CD
Thanks John...as I suspected. And YOU were the first person I expected to reply...read your comments/replies all the time! We do have some public domain selections and a couple of commissions from which to choose. Will contact Harry Fox to calculate cost on my other choices.   All Good Things...
Forum message: Producing a not for sale promotional CD
Dear Colleagues:   Over the years, we have had several of our concerts professionally recorded. Recordings are achived, for "study purposes". My Board has suggested the possibility of putting together a short, promotional CD (20-30 minutes) of some of our best pieces from these past concert C...
Forum message: Selections for concert titled: "And All That Jazz"
I am planning a concert with my community choir of 60+ singers for the Spring, titled: 'And All That Jazz'. The Vocal Consort (auditioned 20 singer ensemble) will perform Chilcott's 'Little Jazz Mass'. While I have several selections already chosen for the full group, I'm wondering what pieces you...
Comment: Re: Psalm settings for Community Choir concert
"Kentucky Psalms" by Alice Parker are worth your perusal. While I have not performed them, I have looked at them as possible pieces for a similar program like you've suggested. They may be out of print, but certainly you could get permission to copy. I learned of the pieces from another community ...
Comment: Re: Themed Concerts
Hi Katie,   Check our website under 'performances'. You can view my themes for the last 11 years...might give you some ideas!   Michael Main, Artistic Director The Arts Chorale of Winchester   www.artschoralewinchester.org
Comment: Re: Chilcott Requiem Recording?
Phillip,   You might contact Gretchen Kuhrmann, Artistic Director of Choralis in Falls Church, VA (Choralis.org). They are performing the work in May, 2012 with Chilcott conducting. She may have a recommendation regarding a recording.   Good Luck!   Michael~   Michael Main, Art...

Comment: Re: Jazz Church Service
Jason,   Please take a look at Bob Chilcott's "Little Jazz Mass". It is a marvelous jazz setting of the ordinary of the Mass. I have programmed it for my group this Spring.   Best,   Michael Main, Artistic Director The Arts Chorale of Winchester (VA)
Comment: Re: Purchasing Seated Risers
Thanks everyone for your input...I will certainly follow up with your suggestions.
Forum message: Purchasing Seated Risers
Dear Colleagues:   The Arts Chorale of Winchester is looking to purchase seated risers (12 sections) for the singers this fall. They will be used during performances a few times a year. I've done some on-line research and have been unable to arrive at a clear conclusion as to which company m...

Comment: Re: Brahms Requiem
Cynthia,   Several years ago, I heard a four-handed version (not sure which version) performed by a local chamber choir of 30. It was well done and while taking on a 'different' musical interpretation (almost intimate...not the sense of a massive choral masterpiece), it was still effective an...
Comment: Re: community chorus music selection responsibility?
Hello Ted...   In my opinion, Dr. Blackley hits the nail on the head. Ten years ago, when founding the group I now conduct (started with 30 singers...65 singers this Spring!) I made sure the above mentioned by Dr. Blackley was clarified. Thus, my title is "Artistic Director/Conductor". We ha...
Comment: Re: 5 Mystical Songs - Vaughan Williams
I spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year on printed music. If I find it on CPDL (which given the music I perform, it is a rarity) I use it. In the case of Mystical Songs, it saved us several hundred dollars. In todays world with more and more budget cuts toward arts funding, one does w...
Comment: Re: 5 Mystical Songs - Vaughan Williams
Paul,   We performed these pieces several years ago with organ. The first four I downloaded from CPDL. However, the fifth one I had to order. As I recall, I think they all were scored for piano and our accompanist adapted them for the organ. The free downloads saved us a ton of money and work...
Comment: Re: Pronunciation of "Angel"
Hi Tina,   Obviously, a couple of choices. As I conduct a community choir of adults, I prefer a 'tall, rich, dark' sound. Having said that, one must be careful with older voices and pitch issues. SO...with "angel", would lean toward the vowel 'eh' on both syllables, as 'ay' produces the dipth...
Comment: Re: choral-part reduction for Beethoven 9th
Cory,   You might try seaching CPDL. We did this several years ago and I know the chorus parts were downloaded from that site. However, can't remember if there was a piano reduction. Worth a try~!   Best,   Michael Main
Comment: Re: Repertoire Suggestion: I need your ideas of finale pieces with "peace theme" for choral festival
Hae-Jong,   You've had a great reply response to your question...hope something we've shared is just the right fit for your group/performance.   Several years ago, we did one such concert titled: "Peace, Hope & Love".  The closing piece I chose was "Anthem of Peace" by Mack Wilberg....
Comment: Re: Recommended instrumentation for musical "White Christmas?"
David,   They just did this at Shenandoah Summer Music Theater at SU...closed on Sunday. I will ask the conductor her recommendations and get back to you.   Best,   Michael
