Comment: Re: Grants for grand pianos
The best source is a music lover in your church. You can get a very nice used upright for 3,000.00. Go shopping for a used grand, get the price- which could be as little as 5,000-8,000.00. Find a music lover in your church to give a lead gift of $1,000.00 or more. The lead gift can go to make a down...
Announcement: Music That Makes Community, Brattleboro Aug. 21-23
Church music colleagues,   Community-building through singing...    What would congregational singing be like if no one needed to hold a book or look at a screen?  What happens when people are free to just listen and sing?  Learn how to lead worshippers singing without a bulletin, book, or ...
Comment: Re: Cheap(er) musicals for high school
MAKIN' IT: The Musical by Cynthia Mercati, music by Ben Allaway, published by Samuel French/Baker's Plays.  GREASE meets A CHORUS LINE.  Takes place in a high school, and like A Chorus Line,  there are asides to the audience.  Much less cost than a Broadway release, very funny and very poignant...
Comment: Re: "It Gets Better" Concert repertoire suggestions?
I am not LGBT myself, but I would this would not disqualify me! Three suggestions from my pieces with Santa Barbara have been done frequently by GALA choruses. Our America, by Ben Allaway, was commissioned by the Des Moines Gay Mens Chorus as a piece that deals with the often conflicted experience o...
Comment: Re: Two ensembles in one class period
I would be hesitant to have student-led sectionals every day as the skill and maturity level usually isn't there to have it work on a longterm basis. Discipline could suffer, and you could lose them. I vote for the idea of a balanced mixed group and a women's group. They need you and deserve you 100...
Comment: Re: Pronunciation of Kyrie text in Palestrina
In the first case there is no reiteration of the vowel, no glottal stroke. It is somewhat like the fluidity provided by elisions in Italian or French. It is more musical this way and the beginning of elision is implied once you hear where the second syllable comes. In the second, it is simply the co...
Comment: Re: Looking for music related to mining
Hi Blair, nice to run into you on Choralnet!  Hope you are well.  I have a piece which has as one of its themes a section about the unemployed quarry workers in Northern Wales in the 1950s and 60s.  It is sung in Welsh with the thing translated by a soloist in English.  The piece is about 10 min...

Comment: Re: Paid Musician Policy for Churches regarding Members
Hi John, I normally have a conversation with member-artists about whether they would like to be paid.  Those who are better off tend to not, those who are unemployed or make their sole living in music may appreciate it, particularly students, and if I can afford it, I'm happy to pay them.  Someo...

Comment: Re: What is the most perfect piece of choral music ever composed? Opinions, please.
Having not seen Lauridsen's O Magnum anywhere here, I felt I must add it to my list, for many of the same reasons I nominated the Durufle Kyrie from Requiem.  It is one of those pieces which, having sung it in a choir, one knows they have found something they could do for the rest of their lives ...
Comment: Re: What is the most perfect piece of choral music ever composed? Opinions, please.
I agree about the Mozart, but the Kyrie from the Durufle Requiem is another example for me for it's deeply satisfying rewards to the singer, economy of style, exquisite craftsmanship, origniality, drama, range, power and spiritual depth.
Comment: Re: Looking to commission a piece by a female composer
Jamie Bernstein, daughter of Leonard Bernstein, does some interesting things, and she is great to have come in to work with choir and audiences. Her body of work is not extensive and not yet published to my knowledge, but she is a melodist/songwriter like her father and would work well with you. She...

Comment: Re: Re-naming and re-branding a community chorus.
Hi Amy,   I lke John's idea about finding a name that honors the history.  How about The Motor City Chorale?  I would think GM would have a problem with any group out there using its name without any connection.  When was the last time GM was even asked to give some financial support?  If...

Comment: Re: The Building Song
Pole sana! (very sorry in Swahili)  I'll take the blame here.  Bulding Song is an early work (1992), and now I would probably put an asterisk by the word explaining that it is a pronunciation common among English-speaking Africans.  Since this is the 20th anniversary of the writing of the larg...

Comment: Re: Patriotic Music
OUR AMERICA, by Ben Allaway, ttbb with piano, gives a patriotic voice to those for whom patriotism is complicated-- gay community, minority communities and others-- because the country they love has not always allowed them to share fully in her freedoms.  The text was created by Ben and Julianne ...
Comment: Re: Church Choir Seating
The other issue is that attendance in any church choir of any size is sporadic based on busy people's schedules, travel, etc., so even though I have a pretty good ideal seating chart-- for sopranos especially-- to address issues of blend and balance, it is rare that I have everyone.  However, sta...
Comment: Re: Choral music for chorus with solo flute
Hi Leonard,   There is an ACDA list of repertoire for choir and flute, which should not be too hard to find.  I have an arrangeent of "Riu, riu chiu" which is rebarred for syllabic stress, so has mixed meters, always fun for young conductors! Sounds like the original, just brings out some of...
Comment: Re: Gay Composers
Our America  by Ben Allaway      Gay theme on patriotism (non-gay composer).  "Land of the free, but how brave we have to be..."  stirring traditional-sounding anthem on the difficulties gay and lesbian people have reconciling their love of country with how their country has treated them,...

Comment: Re: ACDA Recognition for Commercial Choral Musicians
Paul Salmunovich told me that Roger Wagner composed full soundtracks for a cappella choir for the TV series "I Married Joan" performed by the Roger Wagner chorale.  At the time (15 years ago), the scores for all of these were sitting in boxes in Paul's garage.  Hopefully someone can preserve the...

Forum message: Non-Traditional Choir ROBES
Help!!  I am "looking for something different" in apparel for my church choir, and haven't seen anything I like in the usual catalogs.  I'd like something that can be worn over street clothes, like a Nehru jacket, that all ages would look good in, but which has a more contemporary feel like some...
