Don McCullough used to say that you could use 5 or 10 minutes very efficiently if you mark your problem spots during rehearsal and focus immediately on them. It doesn't even take 5 minutes at the keyboard to make right something that just wouldn't come off in rehearsal.

There are a lot of recent papers on the fallacy of multitasking; the bottom line is that attention has only one focus at a time. When you think you are multitasking, you are really shifting your attention between tasks, and doing each with less efficiency.
But, as a singer, I understand... |

Actually, the first definition of 'gay' in the OED is 'noble, beautiful, excellent, fine'. But in any case, while it may be an exception, it is not a counterargument. I think you are giving up control of your language too easily.

I think that insistence on the meaning of 'performance' as 'theatrical performance' does a grave injustice to the language. A quick check of the OED will show that the primary meaning of 'perform' is 'execute, officiate'. The application to specifically theatrical productions is both later and... |

It seems to me that what counts is whether there is evidence internal to the music that indicates that the composer was relying on it being sung with a particular dialect. That is certainly the case with most American spirituals.

| You say this just after we spent a whole year celebrating (and programming) Purcell? (Actually, not done yet - Santa Fe is doing Dido and Aeneas now.)
Maybe my perspective is different; singing in the Episcopalian church, there's a lot of traditional Anglican music - Byrd (we just did the mass... |

It was composed for Paul Hill. It would be appropriate for the advanced SATB chorus.
