Comment: Re: Score Marking
Allan (and Thomas), It seems that marking the bar group idea may have originated with Julius Herford in the early days at Juilliard. His students were Margaret Hillis, Robert Shaw and Lukas Foss among others. If there is any way to look further into what if anything has been published about that...

Comment: Re: Choral works or song arrangements about specific towns
There is a really funny and well written jazzy piece by William Schuman called Singaling as part of a suite called Esses- a short suite for singers on words beginning with 's'.  In this case, it is all towns starting with the letter 's'. It opens with Saratoga, Seattle, Savannah, Susuehanna, Seba...
Comment: Re: Walt Whitman Settings?
Has anyone performed Roy Harris's Symphony for Voices based on three Walt Whitman texts? I would like to know. Michael Hennagin wrote settings to 3 Walt Whitman poems, published by Walton. Not easy but most rewarding! We samg them 10 years ago and my singers are still asking to do them again.  ...

Comment: Re: Conference Morsel: Tone Deaf. Really?
Although I spend 90 per cent of my time conducting adult choirs, I also teach a music class of 3-5 year olds at our local Montessori school where I teach Dalcroze Eurythmics and ear training through general music. I have been there 8 years, and while there are usually one or two children who can't ...

Peter,   Sibelius music software has a "mixer" icon option showing on the top of any score. When you click on it, it opens a window that lists all the instruments and voices in your score. You can adjust the volume of any one of these to put it in the forefront, background, or mute it altogether...

Comment: Re: Roland C-230 organ
We purchased one several years ago and I don't know how we lived without it before. Don't worry about the purists. Early music keyboard players are always more concerned with practicality and what sounds best. I have worked with early music groups who love the instrument and never balk at the electr...

Comment: Re: Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle harmonium/piano tuning
Thank you Martin! We were using a Bosendorfer so if we retuned that I would have lost my job! I think folks will find your suggestion very helpful, and many will decide to using a regular organ rahter than deal with the challenges. Very lovely work all the same. Andrea Goodman
Forum message: Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle harmonium/piano tuning
Has anyone had the misfortune of trying to tune a piano with a harmonium/reed organ in this lovely work? We had the misfortune of having rented an 1880's reed organ for our performance and discovered upon delivery (at the dress rehearsal no less) that it was tuned at A=435. Other than retuning a pi...

Of course, Musica Russica has it.   Andrea Goodman
Comment: Re: Choral + Ballet
I have seen NYC ballet dance to the Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes, old and new. Inspite of the fact the singers were in the dark and largely ignored, the piece worked. The Monteveri work that is terric for dance is the ballet Tirsi e Clori.

Comment: Re: shoulder pain
My singers complain of the same issue when holding their folders. I suggested the any movement of the shoulder may seem to originate from there, but it really originates in the back muscles. Proper posture and alignment, and good old strength training (not only for the whole body- core stability- bu...

Try the Holst 2 Psalms, 86 & 148, but they also require an organ.   Andrea Goodman
Forum message: D'Indy Chansons
I am looking for one copy of the either Six Chanson Opus 100 or Trois Chansons Opus 82 by Vincent D'Indy, published by Salabert. Seems to be out of print and unavailable for sale in the US. Does anyone have these scores in their library?   Thank you.   Andrea Goodman
Comment: Re: Russian repertoire questions
I have been doing Russian Choral music for many years with my choirs, and I have a dissertation in the subject. I only use Mussica Russica editions. There is so much their catalogue that I couldn't possible exhaust the list even if I did five full programs a year of it. It seems they have chosen th...
Comment: Re: Gretchaninov Masses
Try Vladimir Morosan at www.musicarussica.com, know one knows more about this than he does.
Comment: Re: soloist fees
It's always a good idea to give the soloists equal pay. You wouldn't want one of  them finding out that someone else received more than they did for obvious reasons. I have, however, given one of them extra "travel expenses" if they have to come from far away or need accommodations. As for the fee,...
