Announcement: Premiere recording of Galuppi and Jommelli works
I'm very pleased to announce that the first recording of The Galant Masters Project has been released and is now available. This recording includes the premiere recordings of our new editions of: Baldassare Galuppi: "Domine ad adjuvandum me" Baldassare Galuppi: "Laudate pueri" Niccolo J...
Comment: Re: Show choir copyright question
John, you're overlooking one thing: the issue of staging. If the show choir is strictly dancing you might be in the clear considering it simply a musical performance, but as soon as there is a whiff of dramaturgy you're in a grand rights situation and must obtain permission from the copyright holder...
Comment: Re: Sony ic voice recorder for recording rehearsals?
Lisa, you have the right idea. For what you are trying to accomplish, one of the handheld digital recorders is perfect. My recording studio does only choral and choral/orchestral recording. We do mostly large-scale commercial recordings at this point and rarely do any concert or school recording any...
Comment: Re: In Search of Varied SSATB Repertoire
Bruce, the second quarter installment of scores for The Galant Masters Project is to include several pieces by Leonardo Leo, who frequently used this voicing when composing for the Real Cappella in Naples. Around mid-June, we'll be releasing both a Magnificat and a Mass for SSATB and instruments (...
Comment: Re: Producing a CD for sale
Both of these replies are correct. Arrangers get nothing in the mechanical realm. All recording rights stay with the original song. Harry Fox is all you need to do. Tom Tropp SoundByte Studios www.ChoirCD.com
Comment: Re: Piece with choir and alto and soprano solo
Britta, I have two Galuppi pieces about to roll off the line in my Galant Masters Project that would fit this bill wonderfully.   Domine ad adjuvandum me - approximately 3 minutes, soprano and mezzo soloists and SATB choir. Scored for 2 oboes, 2 corni, strings and continuo, but VERY doable w...
Comment: Re: Chamber Choir with Chamber Orchestra
Ryan, I echo Martin's suggestion of Puccini Sr's repertoire. Some really neat stuff there; I've had good luck with Martin's edition of the Magnificat in G with high school kids.   I'd also put in a plug for some of the other 18th century Italians - most of this music is forgotten today, but I...
Comment: Re: Seeking a "catalog" of major 20th C. choral works with orchestra
Found it. Scarecrow Press.   I think my statement above referred to an all-encompassing choral literature text, but I had definitely forgotten about (or was unaware of) this resource, and must admit that it's missing from my shelf.   But yes, publication date is 1998, so it's likely pret...
Comment: Re: Seeking a "catalog" of major 20th C. choral works with orchestra
James, the David Daniels book "Orchestral Music" has been the standard literature resource for orchestra conductors for many years. While there's no parallel resource for choral music (where would you start?), Dave's book includes choral-orchestral works as well, including those with alternate instr...

Comment: Re: Do you have Insurance?
Julia, D&O coverage is something often overlooked by boards of small non-profits, but it's absolutely crucial.  $1,300 for those coverages combined is a good rate. I'm guessing that your agent is quoting you in First Non-profit or another specialty carrier. I do very strongly recommend that y...
Comment: Re: Recording editing software
Mark, I use Sony SoundForge for Wave editing.  I've been using this software package in its various versions for ten years, since long before Sony acquired it, and am very happy with it.  The most basic version is under $100 and you can download it from www.sonycreativesoftware.com.   OH! ...
Comment: Re: Tube Amp Emulation While Recording A Choir
Clayton, use a tube preamp.  I don't mean to sound glib; I'm serious.  There are several REALLY nice, modern tube preamps out there, which I've started using for recording choirs and I've been very pleased with the results.  I'm particularly fond of the ART DPS-II, because it's also a digital p...
Comment: Re: HIV/AIDS Repertoire
Jennifer, Mollie Stone is doing quite a bit of research with this right now.  Her specific area of research is black South African choral music, but in this specific context.   You can find her contact info on her website: www.MollieStone.org.  She's out of the country for a couple months, ...
Comment: Re: Choir Awards
Search system seems to be working again now, but I found only this one discussion from several years ago.
Comment: Re: Sharing mics / splitting lines
I completely agree with Gene on this.  You do NOT want to split the line and plug two mics into the same channel.  This will throw off the impedance of the devices going into the board and create a whole can of worms you don't want.   You'll be far better off having two singers share a micr...
Comment: Re: Choir CD
Patricia, I've done dozens of these projects with groups like yours. I'm more than happy to discuss some ideas with you. My studio doesn't really do projects like this anymore, so I'm not trying to sell you anything. Drop me a line at tom (a) ChoirCD.com, or give me a call at the number on that webs...
Comment: Re: September 11th, firefighters
Jennifer, I'm using the Ireland "Greater Love Hath No Man" for exactly that purpose this year. I've long felt the text of that piece is almost hauntingly appropriate for a 9/11 firefighters memorial. If you don't know the piece, you SHOULD! there's an edition on cpdl, but it's awful. You'll be far b...
Comment: Re: Digital Recorders
Sandra, Tascam is a great brand, and I'm sure that's a fine recorder.  I've started using the Zoom H4n for the types of applications you've listed, as well as for recital recordings and touring choirs, and I absolutely love it (we now own three of them).  Similar to the Tascam, but less expensiv...
Comment: Re: GALUPPI
Vincent, these pieces are quite difficult to find.  Most of the sacred music from this era has never been published.  I have a large-scale project about to commence (www.GalantMusic.com), to edit and publish pieces from this era (particularly Galuppi, who is my favorite!), but haven't yet done a...
Community Forum Post: Need backup for two weekends
Good morning, all.   I leave on tour with my church choir on Friday night, returning Sunday evening, July 10.  I anticipate having Internet access throughout the trip, but since these two Saturdays and Sundays are our travel days, I will probably be unable to do much moderating during my all...
Comment: Re: Planning Your Own Tour In Europe
Mike, I have to agree with Michael here. You don't want to fly solo on a European tour. I've done several domestic tours myself, and that's worked out all right. In addition, I'm personally in Europe once or twice a year for research, so I'm VERY comfortable there. I point all that out to amplify my...
Community Forum Post: Yoga for conductors
Of course it's unrealistic to think that we'd remember every post that comes through, but we've allowed a total of FOUR announcements for the same (commercial) workshop to go through in the past month:   http://testing.choralnet.org/view/284813 http://testing.choralnet.org/view/286246 http:...
Comment: Re: Question about Haydn's "Little Organ Mass"
Austen, I'm working from memory here, as my scores are at home, but I'm almost positive that this Mass (Hob. XXII:7) is only scored for two violins and continuo.  It gets its name from the obbbligato organ solo in the Benedictus movement.  Also, I believe that you only need a soprano soloist.  ...
Comment: Re: Permissions and due diligence
Brent, since you're unable to contact the copyright holder in any other way, the US Copyright Office can actually do it for you.  They can give you instructions in how to request a compulsory license through them.   www.Copyright.gov.
Comment: Re: Can we sell our performance CDs?
Not the case, unfortunately, Kathleen.   The "Fair Use" guidelines released by the House of Representatives Copyright Subcommittee in 1975 (which have not yet been overwritten by subsequent legislation or case law) are very specific in this regard:   "A single copy of recordings of perfo...
Comment: Re: Can we sell our performance CDs?
True, and thanks for clarifying that.  The licenses are compulsory, and cannot be denied.  As for convincing publishers to issue licenses directly, I concur that they are definitely supposed to do this.  I will add, though, as someone who has produced several hundred choral recordings in the pa...
Comment: Re: Can we sell our performance CDs?
Yes, naturally music that is in the public domain does not need to be licensing.  I'd caution you, though, to be sure the edition you are using is in the public domain.  You're probably not singing off of manuscripts.
Comment: Re: Can we sell our performance CDs?
Hi, Lori.   It doesn't matter whether you're making a profit, or even giving the CDs away; distribution is distribution, and therefore must be licensed.  (Incidentally, many ensembles are under the false impression that they can sell single copies to the singers without licensing, as you've ...
Announcement: The Galant Masters Project
I am very excited to announce the "pre-launch" of the Galant Masters Project!   The Galant Masters Project, scheduled to begin publication in Fall 2011, is a five-year project, intended to bring lost works of Galant-style liturgical music to light. The project will seek to edit and publish ap...
Comment: Re: Chorale Finale to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony
At the risk of being blunt.... Why?   It's a symphony that uses a chorus; not a choral piece.   My guess is that you're looking to give your singers the experience, but don't have the budget to buy the orchestra.  If that's the case, and if you have an excellent pianist, you might consi...
Comment: Re: Choral Music and Human Cognition Research
Anna, Northwestern University has an active and aggressive music cognition research program.  I'd recommend contacting Ric Ashley, as he will likely be able to cite several articles off the top of his head.
Comment: Re: Simple video camera and monitor to conduct off-stage musicians
David, any video camera and any monitor should work (provided they have compatible input/output ports, or you have the appropriate adapters).  Wireless is your issue.  However, I just went to Amazon and searched "wireless video tranismitter" and found SEVERAL options for what you seek.
Announcement: Northwestern University reception at ACDA
Good morning!   We didn’t make it into the program book, but would like to invite you a reception for alumni and friends of the Northwestern University graduate conducting program at the ACDA convention in Chicago this week.   The reception will be held in room PDR-3, on the...
Comment: Re: Mixer Suggestions
Annika, for an application like this one, more people use Mackie boards than all the other brands combined (That's based on personal observation; I have no data to back that statement up.), and that's the case for a reason.  They're easy to learn, sound fine, and are built like tanks.  You don't...
Comment: Re: Undergraduate Degree
Well if that's the case, Clay, I'd say suck it up and learn your Orff instruments.  It won't hurt you.   Like you, I never had any intention of teaching at the elementary level.  I lack SO many of the needed skills and patience for that.  My sister-in-law, on the other hand, is a tremendou...
Community Forum Post: Need backup again
Hi, all.  I'm currently out of the country (Salzburg this week; London next) doing dissertation research.  My Internet connection here is OK, and I'm able to moderate to my heart's content; however, the time difference will naturally create some gaps in my moderation coverage today and tomorrow....

Louise, my choirs very much enjoyed collaborating on Carolyn Jennings's "Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain" a few years ago. Very nice piece.

Comment: Re: Recording equipment for our upcoming tour.
Good point, Thomas.  I have not used the M-Audio device, but I seem to recall that it doesn't have built-in microphones (?).    This is the advantage of the Zoom (in my mind), as it has a coincident pair of small-diphragm microphones built in, so external mics aren't all that necessary.  G...
Comment: Re: Unstaged performances of "Amahl and the Night Visitors"
Laura, that depends upon what kind of performance you're planning, as well as what kind of ensemble you have.  Questions very similar to this one come up rather often in the "Legal issues" forum, so take a look through those.  However, if you are a school or church chorus, and planning on doing ...
Comment: Re: Recording equipment for our upcoming tour.
Hi, Patrick.   I echo all of the recommendations for the Zoom H4n.  We have a few of these that we rent to groups going on tour, and have been very pleased with the recording quality.  Definitely a great unit for only $300.   Tom Tropp SoundByte Studios
