Performances are Saturday 6/4 & Sunday 6/5 @ 7:00pm
Angel City Chorale (ACC), the acclaimed Los Angeles choir led by Artistic Director Sue Fink, will present Rhythm Planet, the first weekend in June, featuring the music of two-time Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin and other world beats. A stunning musical journey that traverses the globe, Rhythm Planet celebrates both our diversity and the humanity that unites us all.
ACC’s 150+ voices, its 34-piece orchestra, and a rhythm section playing percussion instruments from around the world, will combine to create an exhilarating and joyous celebration of Earth’s rich cultures and beauty. A concert highlight will include ACC’s version of Toto’s “Africa,” (over 3 million YouTube views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c9-poC5HGw). Special guest Tin will also conduct a portion of the concert with Fink. Pieces by Aaron Copland, Moses Hogan and Ēriks Ešenvalds will also be performed. The performances start at 7:00pm and include a 15-minute intermission; a dessert reception follows each performance.
Angel City Chorale, conducted by Founder/Artistic Director Sue Fink, is a multi-talented, multicultural group of more than 150 men and women that truly reflects the spirit of Los Angeles, the city it calls home. Recognized for its signature blend of musical styles and commitment to community, Angel City Chorale strives to give back to the Los Angeles community through the gift of song, donations, and volunteerism. Offering a diverse selection of musical material including classical, jazz, folk, gospel, rhythm and blues, and more, ACC performs two concerts seasonally, in spring and winter every year, to standing-room only crowds at the historic Wilshire United Methodist Church. ACC has also performed at a variety of venues from Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles to Carnegie Hall in New York; appeared on national television; sung with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel; and worked with artists including Stevie Wonder, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Luther Vandross and Natasha Bedingfield. ACC’s associate conductor is Dan Barnett and the choir’s principal accompanists are Mark McCormick and Gordon Glor.
ACC, formed by Fink in 1993 at McCabe’s Guitar Shop, has recorded four highly acclaimed albums, which are available on CD through various online retailers found here: http://angelcitychorale.org/discography. The choir was also featured throughout Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin’s 2014 album, The Drop That Contained the Sea. The album debuted at number one on Billboard Music’s Traditional Classical Albums chart. ACC performed on 7 of 10 tracks. The choir works often with Tin, both in the studio and collaborating on live performances.
As a way of giving back to the Los Angeles community, each year in December around 100 members of Angel City Chorale also participate in the organization’s Tour of Hope, where the singers take a full program on the road, performing concerts for the homeless, the elderly and others who could genuinely benefit from an infusion of holiday spirit.
Praised by music writer and producer T-Bone Burnett as “one of the most engaging and entertaining evenings of music you can hear in Los Angeles,” Angel City Chorale’s concerts are appreciated by Angelenos for the choir’s signature blend of music styles, unexpected humor, and contagious warmth.
