Or, have you ever seen a full score? I notice that there is one available to purchase in imslp, as well as a downloadable MS that appears to be in C clefs. Joe HickmanParticipantGreetings,I find myself drawn into this discussion because De Profundis is such a beautiful work. I performed it and I think the experience would have been better had I more sensitive to the issue of pitch standard. We performed in C minor and at a = 440Hz and the vocal ranges were not satisfactory. The 1944 Salabert edition was transposed to B-flat minor which, at the time, was thought to be closer to the pitch standard of the time of LaLande. In the Preface to the newer edition by Lionel Sawkins (published by Faber Music in 2001), he states that the pitch standard should rather be a = 415Hz and the work is presented in C minor. The resulting ranges are the most acceptable for use with mixed choir, at least in my experience.The other issue that is increasingly important (in recent research in performance practice of vocal music) is the pronunciation of the Latin text in a French work. The color of the sound is as different as if the orchestral instruments were substituted from the original. If/when we (as a choral profession) adopt the consistent use of the International Phonetic Alphabet and an IPA transcription for this text is created in French pronunciation, this would be no problem. However, the rules for the French Pronunciation of Latin are a little complicated. There is a book by Harold Copeman, publ. in 1996 (in English) that actually transcribes “De profundis” and “Reqiem eternam” in both Italian and French pronunciations to show the difference in this work, but he does not provide a complete transcription of Psalm. There is a more recent book by Vera G.U. Scherr that deals with various pronunciations of Latin. This book is in German. Both books deal with rules from pronunciation to provide a guide. Copeman’s advice is interesting: “….one’s next performance…will betray more life and colour if the brave attempt is made (though preferably not on French soil).”Good luck with all of this. This is a great work, no matter what key and what pronunciation you use.
