Acappellago’s spring concert is bursting with color! And with seven world-premiere pieces! Join us on March 17th & 18th when the Chicago the western suburbs’ leading volunteer a cappella chorus presents Escape to…The Wonderful World of Color.
Our program spans multiple genres, from the classic “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” to the folk song “Green Grow the Lilacs,” the pop harmonies of “Blue Moon” and “Brown-Eyed Girl,” and the jazzy “Orange-Colored Sky” and “Blue Rondo A La Turk.”
Composer and jazz pianist Robert Applebaum, formerly of the North Shore, has provided works for renowned area groups including the Chicago Children’s Choir and Chicago Acappella. We are honored to present five of his newest works in this concert–the Primary Colors Suite (Blue, Red, Yellow) based on poems by Evanston poet Susan Spaeth Cherry, “Silver,” based on a poem by Walter de la Mare, and “Witchery,” with lyrics by Frank Dempster Sherman.
Two of Acappellago’s own members have also composed pieces for this program: “Grey Dawn,” by soprano Lorinda Guenther-Wright, who also plays in the folk trio Aeverling, and “What is Pink?” by one of our favorite arrangers, alto Victoria Linich, using a poem by Christina Rossetti.
Acappellago, now in its 16th season, is known for its eclectic programming that spans classical music, jazz, pop, and gospel & is led by Music Director Dennis R. Smith.
The first performance will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 7:30 pm in the Event Hall at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st Street, Oak Brook.
