Arizona ACDA Hosts Outstanding Summer Choral Workshop Four Corners Choral Workshop Thursday, 22 June through Saturday, 24 June Flagstaff, Arizona University of Northern Arizona From Thursday through Saturday, 22 - 24 June, the best place in the four-state region for a choral director and music educator to be is Flagstaff, Arizona. The AzACDA Four Corners Choral Workshop presents Rodney Eichenberger and Linda Spevacek as master teachers at an event that annually draws participants from half a dozen states and several choral music disciplines. The mood is congenial, the schedule full and comprehensive, the price reasonable, the atmosphere perfect. NAU campus is located half a mile from lodging, food, and shopping areas and always offers warm hospitality in a cool mountain environment. In addition to lecture-demonstrations, there are reading sessions, a bookstore, round table discussions, a concert, and socials. Plan to come early or stay late so you can take in the sights and activities around Flagstaff. Headliner Rodney Eichenberger from Florida State University may be best known for his What They See Is What You Get approach to training choral conductors. The affable international clinician and conductor has taught thousands of music educators how to elicit artful music with careful gesture and a bare minimum of instruction. He will offer dynamic ideas during two major sessions: The Power of the Non-Verbal: Rehearsal Techniques for Choirs of All Ages and Keeping Singers on Task Without Being a Task Master. Volunteers will experience the Eichenberger Model as he molds and adapts their personal technique in Rods final session, Conducting Master Class. Headliner Linda Spevacek, a Phoenix resident, rounds out the Four Corners program by focusing on vocal development and programming. Two of her three major sessions The Choral Director as Voice Teacher and Was Pavarotti Really a Non-Singer? address voice training in the choral setting. Many educators and conductors already are familiar with Lindas video package and will be eager to hear and see the techniques at first hand. The final session, Creative Programming, should be a rollicking experience, given the energy this ebullient composer and music educator brings to public speaking. In addition to general sessions, AzACDA offers literature reading sessions for all types of choral ensemble, complete with complimentary music packets. The three-day event also incorporates a Q&A hour with Spevacek and Eichenberger roundtable discussions, a choral concert, and a goodly dose of social mingling. Information and activities are aimed at the whole choral music spectrum: elementary through high school, college and university, community and church choir, and college students training in music education and choral conducting. Music Mart, a major event sponsor, also will be on hand, making it convenient to purchase necessary resources for the year ahead. The registration fee includes a picnic lunch and several socials, all sessions, and literature packets.
