Vancouver Chamber Choir Twins with Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus
Choral Collaboration Established

VANCOUVER, CANADA (October 2007) - Jon Washburn, Artistic Director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir and Chifuru Matsubara, conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus (Tokon) have announced a formal twinning relationship between the two choirs.

The agreement is based on the history of a growing artistic and cultural relationship between the two professional choirs that began in 2004 with the Vancouver Chamber Choir's tour of Japan and the joint performances of the ensembles in the Tokyo International Performing Arts Festival. Three years later, Matsubara was in town to guest conduct the Vancouver Chamber Choir in a fascinating programme of choral music in NORTHERN LIGHT! Japan, Scandinavia and Canada on October 19.

The twinning is intended to inspire both choirs to further their collaboration in achieving the highest accomplishments in the choral art through activities such as giving concerts in the other's country, sharing repertoire, joint commissions by Japanese and Canadian composers, exchange of conductors, singers, and composers, and undertaking a joint recording of music.

Washburn said, "It's a wonderful thing to have a sister choir now in Japan. The Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus is Japan's finest choral ensemble. And like ourselves it is made up completely of professional singers of the highest calibre. Together we are seeking the heights of the choral experience for ourselves and our loyal audiences."

Regarding the twinning agreement, Matsubara said, "I think it is very good. We look forward to Jon Washburn conducting the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus in Japan in the future. We hope to explore the possibilities of commissioning new works together and learning about Japanese and Canadian choral composers."

This is the first international twinning with the Vancouver Chamber Choir.
