State Songs at All-State FestivalsDate: March 3, 2009
Greetings Colleagues, I have searched the Choralist archives but have found no leads on a topic that has just come up in our state. I come to the you, oh Listers, for wisdom. A long-held tradition at the Alabama All-State Choral Festival is the singing of the state song, "Alabama," by the entire assembly as the closing benedictory moment of the final concerts. This is a specific mixed-choir arrangement, also featuring internal verses for SSA and TTBB. (By the way, this is not "Stars Fell On..." nor "Sweet Home...," but rather the official state song, beginning "Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee....") We are wondering how many other such events across the nation feature a state song, or perhaps some other traditional choral closer. I will compile responses and return them to the List. With thanks, Tim Banks (AL-ACDA President-elect) Professor, Choral Studies & Conducting Samford University, Birmingham AL 35229 tpbanks(a)samford.edu OR timbanks(a)aol.com
