SSAA: "Banned books" themeDate: March 11, 2009
The Orange County (CA) Women's Chorus will soon be preparing a concert, in partnership with a local independent bookstore, on the theme of "banned books." The program will include treble settings of texts that have actually been banned or challenged, and settings of less controversial texts whose authors have frequently been the targets of censors. We've got a nice repertoire list already, including works with words by Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Alice Walker, Madeleine L'Engle, Walt Whitman, Voltaire, Anne Frank, James Joyce, Ray Bradbury, Shakespeare, George Eliot, and Baudelaire. But I'm sure the collective Choralist wisdom is aware of others, and we're always open to performing/premiering unpublished pieces, too. (I'd especially like to introduce a bit more diversity into our line-up of authors and composers for this program!) Thanks in advance for your ideas!
