K-12: Preparing for a guest conductorDate: March 13, 2009
Dear colleagues - I am a member of a semi-professional adult community chorus that will soon be undergoing a major change in leadership. A team has been assembled to help create a plan to help us through this transition, and we would appreciate your input. The chorus has been under the direction of the same conductor for 23 years. During next year's season, our current conductor will be unable to rehearse and direct one of the four concerts we produce in a year. Our choir will be inviting a guest conductor to direct one concert. We are excited about the opportunity to work with a new conductor, but we want to be well prepared for the change! We are looking for procedures, guidelines, advice, and wisdom about such a transition. Essentially, we are trying to compile a set of best practices into a sort of "handbook" for a guest conductor so that this guest would know his or her responsibilities (and, so that the members of the choir would know their responsibilities as well!). In addition, any thoughts or stories about such transitions would be helpful. I'd be happy to post a compilation if there is interest. Thank you for your time, Dan VS Dan Van Sickle Choir Director Xavier High School 1600 W.
