Open and Affirming (gay-inclusive) anthems and hymns
Thanks to everybody who responded to my request for ideas regarding open

The Hymn: A Journal of Congregational Song, in the October 2011 issue, featured an article by the Rev. Jim Mitulski entitled "O for a heart to praise my God: Celebrating Lesbian & Gay Poets and Composers." This article was a reworking of a Hymn Society Hymn Festival in Colorado Springs on the same material, and includes the hymns sung that day.
Besides pointing to poets such as Katherine Lee Bates ("America the Beautiful"), Samuel Longfellow ("Holy Spirit, truth divine"), and Georgia Harkness ("Hope of the world, thou Christ of great compassion"), it included several excellent hymns explicitly on the experience of LGBT people in the church.
My favorite of these, which is not nearly well-known enough, is "We are the church alive," by Jack Hoggatt-St. John and David Pelletier, with the fine processional tune "Church Alive" by Hoggatt. Jack has been great about giving permissions for its use (he's on Facebook, from Berkeley, California) , and I believe you can also get permissions through CCLI. Every church that has ever sung it has loved it.
