Even allowing for my 3000 concerts with The King's Singers in some of the
great halls of the world, I confess to the list that conducting our all
student forces yesterday in Walton's BELSHAZZAR'S FEAST was
probably one of the most exciting events in my career in music so
far!

I do commend this wonderful piece to everyone. It is diffcult, but not
impossible for students - choir and orchestra alike. Young voices sound
thrilling in Walton's choral textures and, with the text clearly
enunciated and the rhythms crisp, the piece is a knockout.

It deserves to be better known and more often performed by university
choral departments who relish a challenge.

suggestions for Masses suitable for a small group of expert singers with

1. Dvorak: "Mass in D major". Original version for organ and choir.
Excellent work, not often enough performed. You can use the Kalmus edition
(which is actually the chorus parts for the orchestra version, so a few
corrections need to be made) for the chorus, but you'll need the Suprahon
edition for the conductor and organist.
2. Kodaly: "Missa brevis" in the original version for organ.
3. Saint-Saens: "Mass" (for TWO organs - although I've never done it, the
two instruments never(?) play together, so I suppose it could be done with
one. Some delicious moments.)
4. Reger: "Requiem" Incredible piece.
Always the Durufle "Requiem." And there must be something by William
Mathias.
