Bulgarian

Subject: Bulgarian Choral Music Available

Attention Choristers and Choral Music Enthusiasts:

Thanks to the strong connections my Bulgarian-born musician wife maintains
with the musical establishments in her homeland--the State Music Academies in
Sofia and Plovdiv, and the Academy of Sciences--I have just gained access to
an invaluable archive of Bulgarian music. Most of us in the West know only
the folk-music arrangements for women’s chorus made famous by Philip Koutev
and “Les Mystere Voix Bulgares.” However, the collections that I received
contain works by the leading figures of Bulgaria’s musical avant-garde, many
of whose members have been active since the late 1940s, but whose compositions
are virtually unknown outside of Bulgaria.

What is particularly thrilling for me is that while radio broadcast recordings
exist, much of it remains unpublished in manuscript form just waiting to be
issued. Among the works are some fine acapella compositions for women’s
chorus by the lamentably late composers, Konstantin Iliev and Ivan Spassov, in
addition to an array of piano, chamber and orchestral works. The styles run
the full gamut from traditional folk- and liturgical-inspired compositions to
aleatory works using experimental notational techniques.

Through the personal contacts we have maintained with many of the composers
and their widows, we have acquired the exclusive rights to much of it with the
promise that we would try to make it available to western performers and
audiences. But before I go to the expense and the blood, sweat and tears of
publishing and distributing this material, I would like to know if anyone out
there is interested in acquiring and performing this new music. If there is
an interest the supply of music is potentially unlimited.

Dear Dr. Myers,

I found your message about the availability of bulgarian choral music by pure chance. I would really like to know what happened to the material you mention, what you planned or managed to do with it, and so on. I would be very interested to see some of it.

Thanks a lot in advance for your reply,

I am most interested in performing some of the works recorded by Bulgarian women's ensembles. Are they published and available yet, or do such pieces only exist in manuscript?

Definitely interested! I have seen the touring group three times now, and have wondered if their repertoire is published. I have few male singers, but lots of willing girls ready to sing anything. Phil.Azelton@verizon.net

After a protracted hiatus, Vox Bulgarica has restructured and is back. We now have a new website and are in the process of expanding. Please check us out at www.voxbulgar.com, and give us your feedback!

Greetings Choristers:

Vox Bulgarica has expanded once again. After a fruitful stay in Bulgaria this summer, we are pleased to report that we are now official distributors for the Union of Bulgarian Composers. We now have access to their complete catalogue. In addition, as many of you may already know, we are also distributors of GegaNew recordings, and will be actively collaborating on new projects with that company in the new future. Best of all, we have just released volume three of our choral anthology "Voices of the Plain", which is available for immediate sale. This is our best effort yet. Check out our website: ww.voxbulgar.com.

Cheers,

Gregory Myers
