Chanukah: General repertoire

Date: Fri, 3 Nov 1995 11:46:42 -0500 From: Andante147(a)aol.com Subject: Hannukah Repertoire Compilation Thanks, Choralist for the wonderful response! I'm sorry, I wish that I could address you by your real name, but it didn't seem to make it into your e-mail request. Although I have a vested interest, I can recommend "Arise and Be Free", a setting of four traditional Chanukah songs that I arranged for Transcontinental (the largest Jewish publishing house in the U.S.). The easiest (and most energetic) of the four is "S'vivon, Sov, Sov, Sov" (a song about the spinning top game played by children on Chanukah). The settings were conceived to be sung a cappella, but the rehearsal piano part will support a "limited rehearsed choir" just fine. It is in transliterated Hebrew (a pronunciation guide is included, along with a translation). I can even suggest a more simplified version, if needed. I would imagine that you can reach Transcontinental directly to order if you are under the gun (tell them I suggested you call them--I'll take the heat). Their number in New York is: (212) 249-0100 Ph., (212) 472-8280 FAX. I sincerely hope that you will like it and perhaps will program the other pieces in the set for future concerts (if you really like it, I would appreciate your considering a mention of it in ChoralTalk). Good luck, and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Sincerely, Steve Barnett (BarMusProd(a)aol.com) Choral Music for Chanukah See the article: Jacobson, Joshua. This is a little more difficult but tells the entire story of Hanukkah in an exciting, interesting way. Another simple arrangement is: ALTMAN, Shalon, arr.: Bim-Bam; Folk Song; SATB; Hebrew; Theodore Presser, 352-00191 Good luck! Linda Allen Anderson Maoz Tsur (Rock of Ages) by Benedetto Marcello [Hebrew and English texts] Lawson-Gould Co.51861 A.K. Hello, This is Rebecca R. Winnie from Wisconsin. Mi Y'Mallel arranged by Herbert Fromm is the best, and quickest to learn (Transcontinental Music Publications 990239) Next is Mo'oz Tzur (Rock of Ages) arranged by Samuel Adler -- the English translation is ok-- Transcontinental again TCL134. A Song of Hanukkah is more of a children's song in a medium difficult arrangement by Samuel Adler in English only -- G.Schirmer 11162. A very powerful piece that tells the story of Hanukkah is Hayo, Haya arranged by Stephen Prussing, Mark Foster, MF 680. Good Luck. Try "Light the Legend." By Michael Isaacson. Transcontinental Press. 838 5th Ave. in New York. I am doing a piece with my chamber chorus by Lewandowski which is a Hannukah song written in Ashkenazic Hebrew. This may be a little difficult, since the pronunciation is different from what you'd expect from Sephardic Hebrew. We're also doing a Ladino (the archaic form of Spanish spoken by the Sephardim) piece called "Ocho Kandelikas" (Eight Candles). Not at all difficult, could be learned in a couple of rehearsals (with a little practice at home). Not to mention a chant called "Maoz Tsur" which can be done in unison or in four parts. We've done the unison and are planning to do the harmonized version this December. Unison is pretty easy (just the Hebrew is tricky); the four-part probably isn't bad because we haven't even read through it yet and we're performing on December 10! Have had good success in the performance of my version of "Haya, Hayo," a traditional folk song. SATB, fairly easy with authentic drama. Text in Hebrew. You can see and hear the music if you go to www.songsforall.com, click on "repertoire" and then click on the title of the piece.
