From: JOSCHEIER(a)aol.com Subject: Compilation: Lenten Rep Suggestions Dear Choralist, A few days ago I asked for recommendations from you regarding the following texts: Ubi Caritas Hosanna to the Son of David By The Waters of Babylon This was for a quartet of professional voices- SATB, in a small Catholic Chapel. In the interest of time (mine, I'm afraid- it is limited), I've published a compilation without giving the identity of all of the very kind, knowlegeable and helpful people who responded. I am also still interested in the topic, so don't let this compilation stop you from making additional suggestions. Thank you, everyone, for your help. Ubi Caritas Suggestions - Durufle's was by far the most frequently mentioned. (This does divide T and B) - Bart Bradfield/Santa Barbara Publishing/utilizes the whole text and the plainchant - Richard Proulx/GIA Publications - Randall Giles/Paraclete Press Hosanna to the Son of David - Richard E. Frey's version (no additional information) - Pueri Hebraeroum by Victoria which includes Hosanna, filio David - Most likely there are settings by Palestrina/Lassus/Morales according to one author - Settings by Weelkes and Gibbons require five voices (SATBarB) By The Waters of Babylon - By far the most popular recommendation was Super Flumina Babylonis by Palestrina - Charpentier did a version for voices and obbligato instruments - Alexander Archangelsky/Musica Russica - Eero Sipliaa, a Finnish composer, set this text If you have any futher comments, please e-mail me. Time is of the essence! Isn't it always! Again, thank you to everyone who responded: The Waters of Babylon - An SATB setting is available by William Boyce - An SATB setting with accompaniment is available by Daniel Nelson. This is published by Santa Barbara Publishing, number SBMP 131. The e-mail address for Santa Barbara Publishin is sbmp(a)sprynet.com (Note that my previous compilation included a setting of Ubi Caritas by Bart Bradfield also published by Santa Barbara) Ubi Caritas - The setting by the Taize monks (probably published by GIA or Oregon Catholic Press) was recommened -Hosanna to the Son of David - An SATB setting by David Moe was recommended. One suggestion to everyone moved by the kindness of their heart to respond to appeals like mine: when you respond (and I've made this same resolution) please include whatever publishing information you can (name, catalog number and phone number would be absolutely wonderful) and perhaps a few words on the piece- level of difficulty, if it is accompanied or not and if so, by what instruments, why you like it and so on. Otherwise someone in my situation will find oneself with plenty of suggestions but no clear reason to pursue one or the other, particularly if the composers are unknown to one. And, of course, including the publisher information just helps lazy or overcapacity souls like myself (take your pick!) get started. Just a suggestion, and in no way meant to diminish my gratitude for your replies. Here are a few more excellent suggestions regarding settings of the texts I had included in my original query: Ubi Caritas, Hosanna to the Son of David and By The Waters of Babylon: Ubi Caritas - John Leavittt/CPP Belwin/piano accompaniment/lovely setting according to J. Specht Hosanna to the Son of David - John Specht also recommended the Daniel Moe setting, and provided additional information: published by Presser, available in SATB and SAB, the number for SATB is 352-00212 - Carlton Young also wrote a setting of this full text with a congregational response. Imant Raminsh wrote a terrific setting of Ubi caritas (publ. Jaymar). Couldn't do it with a quartet, though, because there's extensive divisi. He gives Durufle a run for his money!

Ubi Caritas
-There is a beautiful, short SAB setting by Elliot Z. Levine. Nice crunchy harmonies. (http://www.shadowpress.biz/catalog.html)
-Also check out Paul Halley's SATB setting, which combines a Yoruba chant with the Durufle setting of the original chant. (http://www.pelagosmusic.com)
Hosanna to the Son of David
-This Moravian classic by Christian Gregor has a simple antiphonal structure for SATB and children's choir. A crowd-pleaser. |
