From: Jamie Foster Subject: COMPILATION: Western/Cowboy songs for SATB A few weeks ago I posted a request for suggestions of western/cowboy oriented repertoire for a reasonably-talented church choir (SATB, 20-or-so members) to do at a Saturday afternoon "fun" event (along with other folks doing other western things) at the church. Here are the ideas that came in. If I get any more, I'll send an addendum. ================================== There are a couple of arrangements of "Happy Trails to You" bouncing around. Also I've done a TTBB arr. of "Don't Fence Me In" (K. Shaw, maybe? Hal Leonard at any rate.) My fellows had a great time doing it - complete with mock shoot-out at the end! Susan Mueller SGEMueller(a)aol.com ============================= How about Charlie Rutlage by Charles Ives? I believe there's a unison choir setting published by Associated Music with piano four-hands. Betsy Betsy Burleigh Coordinator, Choral & Vocal Music Cleveland State University Euclid Ave. at E. 24th St. Cleveland, OH 44115 phone: (216) 687-3998 fax: (216) 687-9279 ================================= You may wish to take a look at the works of Ernst Bacon, an American composer from, I think, California. In particular, "Colorado Trail", "John Hardy" and "Shouting Pilgrim". From: David Potts ================================== Next to Lovin' (I Like Fightin' Best) arr. Kirby Shaw - TB Good luck! Norma B. ================================== Roger Wagner "Western Songs" I believe it is a Lawson Gould Publication -- Dr. Joel D. Knapp Director of Choral Activities Jacksonville State University Jacksonville, AL 36265 205-782-5544 ================================== May I recommend "Southwestern Suite" an arrangement by Randol Alan Bass. It's fun to do, and although some sections are tricky, they can be handled well by an average group. Good luck with your show. From: lance treadway ================================== Stomp your Foot - copland From: "JUDITH CONSENTINO" ================================== An arrangement of Buffalo Gals for SATB and piano My own publication A set of three pieces called " The Settling Years" EC Schirmer A set of three songs for soprano and piano called "Cowboy Songs" EC Schirmer Are you interested in seeing any of them? Libby Larsen Composer 2205 Kenwood Parkway Minneapolis, MN 55405 ================================== There's a PDQ Bach cantata with a cowboy theme (I can't remember the name) that I saw a DC area choral society do once in a church parish hall as a fundraiser. It was a hoot! Kathy Bowers St. Louis MO ================================== It's not really "western" (thoroughly), but Linda Spevacek's "American Folk Rhapsody #2" might really fit your bill. It's medley of Jenny Jenkins, On Springfield Mountain, and Old Dan Tucker. Very fun. There's also Randall Stroope's (sp?) "Goin' To The Auction" (a little more difficult, but fun). Robert C. Fullerton http://www.compsol.net/users/fllrtn ================================== There are some great old Norman Luboff arrangements of Streets of Laredo and Poor Lonesome Cowboy that would fit the bill. I'm afraid I've forgotten who publishes them, but it was a major company...should be easy to find. You might want to check out some of "the old hymns" that the frontier folk would have sung. Brett Nolker Director of Music Education Augustana College Rock Island, Illinois 61201 (309) 794-7343 fax (309) 794-7678 muNolker(a)Augustana.edu ================================== Don't know if you want to break up the genders, but I know two fun and good arrangments for 3 pt. men and one for mixed: Don't Fence Me In TBB (or TTB) arr. Kirby Shaw The Streets of Laredo TBB (or TTB) - published National Music Press, but can't remember thename of the arranger right now Cool Water - TTBB w/ladies trio - also can't remember arranger - seems that it was in the "Waring Choral Series" but don't remember. Believe it is a well-known arrangment. Hope this is what you had in mind. Tim Howard =================================== Try Mack Wilberg's setting of "Cindy" -- you even could use a clogger to dance part of it! Great setting -- published by Hinshaw From: "Dr. Darryl Miller" ==================================== I do not know if it is still available, but Coleman Smith did a nice arrangement of "Your the Reason God Made Oklahoma." I do not remember who published it. Stroup (James R.) jayrssll(a)sprintmail.com =========================== That's it. Thanks to all who provided ideas!
