We did a food concert a few years ago, and did two pieces which brought the
house down. They were accompanied, but if you have an arranger and a little
(grin) time, you could probably work it out.

1. Lime Jello, Marshmallow, Cottage Cheese Surprise
by William Bolcolm (sp?)
An excruciatingly accurate description of a typical
potluck dinner, sung by a soprano. The piano accompaniment
for this is straight-forward. Should be easy to turn it into
a 4- or 5-part swingle singers-type background.

2. Mayonaise - can't remember the composer
(and all my music is packed in boxes---we're moving)
SATB jazz setting; this pervert puts mayo on EVERYTHING:
sandwiches, steak, casseroles, desserts, breakfast cereal,
even cat food... *gross*. Jazz accompaniment will be more
difficult to adapt than #1.

It would be best (both ethically and legally) to have the composer
arrange it, or at the very least get permission from the composer and
publisher to make an arrangement. My most recent information on how to
reach William Bolcom:

William E. Bolcom
University of Michigan--Ann Arbor
School of Music
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-5097

I also bet that Bolcom has e-mail. With all the above information,
contacting him is easy. So DO THE RIGHT THING, folks, if you
want to alter or arrange a composer's work. Get the composer to do
it, or get the proper permissions! Thanks in advance!

Subject: seven deadly sins

To Kayla and colleagues re "The Usual Vices":
With my 12-voice Chamber Singers I've done John Rutter's Banquet Fugue
(Hinshaw Music - HMC-759), a very funny fugue a la J.S. Bach (subject:
guzzle, guzzle, munch, munch, gobble, gobble, chomp) complete with whining
guest ("There's a fly in my soup") and snippy waiter ("Well, it won't eat
much, sir") as well as a call for a doctor in the house and a final belch.
I directed (started and stopped, essentially) with a large wooden spoon.
You could have much fun with it.

The 'gobble, gobble' fugue is part of a larger choral work 'The Reluctant
Dragon' which contains a number of other prize moments - a triple parody of
Auden, Britten and (in the recording) Pears, for example. It was a cult
piece among my friends when I was a student.
