From: RobertamR(a)aol.com Subject: Psalm 8 Settings Summary Many thanks everyone who responded to my request for Psalm 8 settings in my time of need! The one interesting thing that came out of this was: it wasn't just my imagination--there really aren't all that many settings of this psalm out there. Composers, take note! ******************** How Excellent Thy Name - Howard Hanson pub. Carl Fischer (most votes) How Excellent Thy Name - Eugene Butler pub. Bourne (very close second) The Majesty and Glory of Your Name - Tom Fettke/Text by Linda Lee Johnson pub. Word CS 2954 Psalm 8 - John Corigliano pub. G. Schirmer (several votes each) >From Lester Seigel: "Dave Brubeck's *Gates of Justice.* This otherwise extremely overblown work has this very nice moment for a baritone solo on the text you mention, followed by a very finely-crafted setting of "How Glorious is Thy Name" for a traditional SATB texture." I must notice that you did not receive my second mail adding 14 additional Psalm 8 to the list, and sent after your estonishment, on January 7,1996. Here comes this list again of 17 Psalm 8 settings, with an additional 20 "title equivalent pieces". Quantitatively, the result is after all not too bad. As the summary has already been sent to choralist, I send a copy of this message to choralist. Regards, Jean Sturm. ************************************ Rob Ross wrote: >is this *all* that your search came up with? It would seem then, that >perhaps Psalm 8 has been rather sparsely treated by composers! Sorry! I did it fast last time, because busy in other things. I checked again more "scientifically", ... and found 14 more: 1) I was fooled by the "Psalm 008" and did not look further at Psalm 8. 2) I only looked in the titles and not in the "source of text" field. One sees that the text of the titles changes quite a bit! If one looks, in a second approach, to find the identical titles but not mentioning that it is psalm 8, one finds 20 more! You may check if they come really from psalm 8. This search shows how it may be delicate to handle with full power a database input by several people and not entirely reread (it will actually never be... because always evoluting). Here follow the 17 answers mentioning explicitely psalm 8, followed by the 20 additional, found by identical titles: Regards, Jean Sturm ************************************************************************** SEARCH LIST IN THE DATABASE M U S I C A Copyright : - CENTRE D'ART POLYPHONIQUE D'ALSACE Le Kleebach, F-68140 MUNSTER (France) (+33) 89 77 33 00 / FAX (+33) 89 77 51 94 / e-mail: 100451.700(a)Compuserve.Com, - INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR CHORAL MUSIC, NAMUR (Belgium) (+32) 81 73 57 96 / FAX (+32) 81 73 78 72 / e-mail: 100256.3252(a)Compuserve.Com with the collaboration of several partners around the world (list on request).
