The following recent reference book includes extensive information
about 500 composers who were alive at the time they started
compiling information for the project. I expect some of the composers
covered here are too new to have been in the most recent general
Groves set.

It is usually necessary to check a number of sources for dates of composers
not in Grove or Baker (although the newest edition of Baker's has many
additions).
These sources are often helpful:

Schwann "Opus" CD catalogue (surprisingly useful and accurate)
E. Ruth Anderson, CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN COMPOSERS:
A BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY
THE NEW GROVE DICTIONARY OF MUSIC IN AMERICA
COMPOSERS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES (Epstein)

Harder, of course, to track down European composers, but this may be a start.

contemporary composers by Storm Bull that I mentioned earlier
There are three volumes, all with the same title, published
