The first is a setting of the lovely old
Southern Folksong and it is arranged by a woman, Ruth Artman. "Aura Lee"
published by Hinshaw HMC-1199 SSA with an optional flute part. The other
is "Summer Night" words and music by Jane Foster Knox. SSAA, also published
by Hinshaw HMC-591. The women of my choir enjoy doing both of these and
they have been well received by audiences.

the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei sections of the mass. For a

You might want to look at the vocal works by Deon Nielsen Price. I was in
a
Mu Phi Epsilon Choir at Convention last August and we sang her "Up, My
Neighbour, Come Way" arranged for SSA/Piano. Published by Culver Crest
Publications, Culver City, CA. Her works are "vocally friendly." I think
your students might enjoy her compositions as well as getting to know a
modern woman composer.

1. "Consiglio amoroso"-SAB- by Barbara Strozzi (1610-1664), ed. by
Carolyn Raney, published by Broude Brothers Limited of New York #MW2. It
appears
to be part of a collection published by Broude called "Nine Centuries of
Music by Women". You could contact Broude publishers to get a listing of
the
other selections in this collection. The Music Mart of Albuquerque choral
staff can be reached via an 800 phone number that I don't have at my house.
They can give you the phone # of Broude publishers and may even having
the listing of pieces in this collection.

2. "Nova, Nova, Ave Fit Ex Eva" SATB by Wiliametta Spencer, a cappella,
published by National Music Publishers, WHC Series No. 13. This piece is
absolutely beautiful.

3. "Three Madrigals" - SATB by Emma Lou Diemer. Published by Boosey &
Hawkes, #5417. Text is based on Shakespeare--My students enjoyed
thiiscollection last year. Two years ago New Mexico's All State Women's
Choir performed another excellent selection by Emma Lou Diemer entitled
"Prairie Spring".

4. My Women's Choir last year performed "The River Sleeps Beneath the
Sky" by Mary Lynn Lightfoot. The girls voted it their favorite piece of
the
year.

If your choir is up to it, it would be great for them to experience one of
our first women composers, Hildegard von Bingen. Not only was she a
composer
but also a scientist, herbalist, botanist, and teacher. Her chant can be
found in many places. It is challenging but would be a great experience,
especially for your women!
