Almost every response plugged JAVA JIVE (after the Manhattan transfer). ...Should be available from either Primarily Acappella or Mainely Acappella
catalogs (both are online). ...arr. by Huff or someone ...arr. by F. W. Wilson ...arr. Kirby Shaw, a capp., for both SATB and SAB Hal Leonard, pub. ...Ed Lojeski's SATB arrangement of "Java Jive" by ben Oakland and Milton Drake, as recorded by Manhattan Transfer. It's published by Warner Bros. with piano accompaniment, but can just as effectively be sung a cappella.
One might not think of "Java Jive" on the same bill as J.S. Bach's Coffee Cantata, No. 211( c. 1742), a domestic drama entitled "Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht," but then again, why not?
I have an a cappella transcription I made of three movements from the Bach Coffee Cantata (2 recits. and an aria). It's really funny. I can sell you multiple copies if you like, and a tape. Jonathan Miller Chicago a cappella SingWow(a)aol.com
Coffee in a Cardboard Cup by Kander and Ebb (vaudeville-type song from Seventy Girls Seventy (Broadway show)) - a personal favorite, can be scored for multiple peoples, but mainly a duet.
A patter song with piano, but could be formatted for a choir, and it's my favorite: "Have Some Madiera, My Dear " by Flanders and Swann. There is a published anthology of F&S songs, possibly OUP...
"They Grow an Aweful Lot of Coffee in Brazil" "Tea for Two"
Pour, O Pour the Pirate Sherry, from Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance
The Chester Book of Madrigals, volume 6, devoted to Smoking and Drinking, has a dozen drinking songs. lassus Ein Guter Wein, Bruck's So trinken wir alle, Certon's C'est trop parle' de Bacchus, etc.
Several Purcell drinking rounds, such as: Upon Woman's Love ('tis women makes us love; 'tis love that makes us sad; 'tis sadness makes us drink; and drinking makes us mad!), A Farewell to Wives, and those that begin: Once in our lives I gave her cakes and I gave her ale... Once, Twice, Thrice, I julia tried... and many others! ---
