Tapes available of everything but Day Before Xmas :-(

I would highly recommend Carols and Lullabyes: Christmas in the Southwest by
Conrad Susa for SATB (splits occasionally), harp. marimba, and guitar. It's a
collection of Mexican/spanish carols beautifully arranged. Many solo
opportunities (some optional). Total time is about 25 minutes. Medium
difficulty - one tricky section getting from an a cappela section back to
accompanied.
accompanied.

Dan Pinkham, Advent Cantata, 7 movements on the "O" antiphons, for mixed
chorus, wind quintet and harp (Peters?)

My chamber choir of 21 performed a setting of "O Magnum Mysterium" by Alden
Ashforth last Christmas (some divisi, and it requires an excellent soprano
soloist, which we had.) Both choir and audience loved it.

Another favorite of mine, which we also performed last year is the John
Joubert setting of "There Is No Rose of Such Virtue".

I don't have my copies of these at hand, but I think the Ashforth is
published by E.C. Schirmer and the Joubert by Novello.

Sincerely,

Richard Householder

Lloyd Pfautsch's DAY FOR DANCING is a great little suite for small choir
and some instruments. I'm sorry I can't be more specific.
It's for Christmas.

I continue to recommend the Halsey Stevens Magnificat; SATB, keyboard &
trumpet. Been a long time since I've done it; has asymetrical meters but not
difficult for a good group. About 7 minutes if I recall. Mark Foster.

Vern Sanders

There's Randall Thompson's "Place of the Blest" for SSAA and chamber
orchestra. It's beautiful.

I just did a new arrangement of the three spanish
christmas carols that New York Pro Musica edited way back when- Riu, riu
chiu; E la don, don (which I title "Dansaron"); and Dadme albricias hijos
d'Eua. These are with harp or piano, flute and percussion, just sent to the
printer from Santa Barbara Music Publishing and should be available in less
than a month. The set lasts approx 7-8 mins.
I have a work for small wind ensemble, organ and choir called King of Light
that is a 7 minute piece, same orchestration as the smaller version of
Honneger's King David- 2fl, ob, 2cl, bsn, 2trpt, hrn, trb, tba, cym, timp, fr
cym, celeste, org, choir, bass vln. Big closer. (This is also arranged for
concert band (no organ) and full orchestra.) Written for Luther College
Juletide Festival. I can send a score and tape.

Hope you find this useful.

Best regards,

Ben Allaway

Re your request for Christmas choral music, I am forwarding to you a packet
of free samples of music I have published over the past few years. I am
particularly interested in having you see a piece called "Sing Gloria" which
is unpublished, but which I will include in the bunch. Some of these pieces
have a children's part, but they can be just as effectively performed using
an adult soloist in place of children. There is one piece, "Agnus Dei",
which is not specifically Christmas but whose subject, in addition to the
Agnus Dei lyrics, includes a poem describing an Alaskan snowstorm. The
piece was written as one movement to "A Mass for Winter Solstice", in which
several Alaskan composers and several Alaskan poets combined to include one
poem in each movement along with the Latin. Kind of intriguing, especially
for non-Alaskans to perform! I am a graduate student in music composoition
and conducting at University of Alaska Fairbanks; hence the Alaskan theme.
I would be very interested in your comments about any of the music, and I
hope there will be something in the packet you can use. The published
pieces are all available through Jackman Music Corporation, as indicated on
the music; unpublished pieces are under copyright, but you may xerox
whatever copies you need. I hope to have "Sing Gloria" published this fall
through Presser, so if you want to order it in REAL form, let me know.
Thanks for your consideration. AKA
Ann Kapp Andersen
