Hymns with orchestral accompanimentThanks to everyone for your suggestions and offers. The original request was for hymn suggestions and sources for hymns with orchestration for a small orchestra with traditional setting. ********************************** Check out the John Rutter hymn settings published by Hinshaw - there are 15 of them, all orchestrated, (some with harp) for festival and congregational use. "O God Our Help in Ages Past," "Amazing Grace." etc etc. ********************************** Oxford University Press has a pretty extensive selection of hymns with orchestral accompaniments. Composers range from Handel to Rutter to Mack Wilberg. I'm attaching a link http://www.oup-usa.org/music/choral/index.html to the complete Oxford University Press Choral Catalog. ********************************** "Word" has published an instrumentalists hymnal. All the parts are already broken out and you just buy the books appropriate to your ensemble. The arrangements are compelling. Be sure that you also get the piano edition since it has some added interest in the accompaniment there as well. ********************************** I write arrangements for my instrumental ensembles for my own ministry, but mainly for Easter and Christmas, and these include winds, strings, brass, and percussion, tailored to whatever I have for any particular year. I would be happy to write arrangements for you for those things you want to do. Nick Palmer www.nicholaspalmer.com (includes some audio samples) ********************************** Check Oxford University Press. Plenty of hymns there, arr. by Willcocks, Rutter, and others. Rental, alas, but some for sale too. Also St. James Music Press, a small outfit in Hopkinsville, KY, who publishes some arrangements, perhaps only for brass, but maybe for orch too. AND, of course, there is an unending bounty of arrangments from "joshandnancy" -- very good ones, I understand. Do 'em yourself. You know the parts you need, and the ability of the players. You don't need to be fancy -- simply score out the SATB hymn. Or, do that and write an 8-bar intro, or a coda, or add descant in upper instruments, or do one verse strings only, one brass, or tpt solo against stgs -- and on and on. Why pay the money for something you can do for yourself, just as well or better, since the arr. will be tailored to your own players? Go for it. ********************************** Holst has two settings of Psalm 86 and Psalm !48 (which I think is All Creatures of our God and King--lasst uns erfreuen) that are orcehstrated and fantastic. Psalm 148 is particularily Easter-appropriate. ********************************** I have two anthems which use brass and timpani. Your request implies strings, but I'll at least tell you about these two in case you are interested. 1. "Jesus Shall Reign" (DUKE STREET) (optional text: "I Know That My Redeemer Lives") 425-401 (SATB , organ, brass quintet, timp., opt. cong.) Selah Publishing Co. www.selahpub.com 1-800-852-6172 2. "Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation" (WESTMINSTER) (SATB, handbells, brass, organ, timpani) Alliance Music Publications, Inc. 713-868-9980 These are both straightforward, "classic," English-style settings. I hope you will take a look at them. Sincerely. Edwin T. Childs Tlims23(a)aol.com ********************************** I make custom orchestrations, using Finale, for church orchestras using traditional hymns, etc. in the Public Domain. Prices usually range from $20 per hymn (includes score and parts for small orchestra) and up (for full symphonic, customized descants, free harmonizations, etc.) Professor of Orchestration at Louisiana State University and now (in semi-retirement) at Loyola U. in New Orleans and over twenty years experience in doing this and other professional orchestrations for musicians in the NO area. Let me know what you'd like and I'll be delighted to quote you a very attractive price. Jerry F. Davidson, Ph.D., MSacMus, AAGO jfd112(a)cox.net ********************************** In the Fred Waring Library we have the following with orchestra accompaniment: Christ The Lord Is Risen Today God Of Our Fathers The Lord's Prayer Lead On Oh King Eternal Onward Christian Soldiers Open The Gates of the Temple Sometime you might consider Roy Ringwald's "Song of Easter" which also has orchestral accompaniment. (and his "Song of Christmas" and "The Holy City") Had to get a plug in. ********************************** I am in the process of orchestrating Stainer's "The Crucifixion" have have completed all of the hymns. The last one, entitled, 'For the Love of Jesus' sounds awesome (IMHO) with orchestra. My instrumentation is Strings, timp, trumpet, flute, clarinet, oboe, and bassoon, but I have made the hymn orchestrations VERY flexible, due to the nature of them having many verses. I'd be happy to send you a sample page from the score if you are interested. Just reply with your snail mail addy.
