Stuart McIntosh, The Ruling MoonDear Listers It was kind of Timothy Cooper to mention my a cappella piece 'The Ruling Moon' in his compilation recently. I thought you might like to know a little more about the it. 'The Ruling Moon' is set to a text by the English poet William Bell (1924-1948) who died tragically young after a mountaineering accident in the Swiss Alps. His poetry (only a small amount anway) is often in the form of 'elegies' containing many varied and interesting references. 'Elegy XII'gives us the poet's view of the moon and its unchanging nature, looking down on the shifting sands of human kind. Bell's language is often almost impressionistic, a feature that I tried to mirror in certain sections of the work. My setting is for an a cappella group with up to 12 divisis though for the most part it is written for up to 8 parts SSAATTBB. Lasting 9 minutes 'The Ruling Moon' was commissioned by the St Louis Chamber Chorus and first performed by them in 1997. since then several fine college choirs have performed the piece most notably the fine choir from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield MO conducted brilliantly by Dr Guy Webb. If you are interested in the piece please contact me e-mail(smacmus(a)yahoo.com). I am very keen that this work is heard and performed as much as possible. To be honest it does need a fine choir to perform it well! I would love to discuss it further with any of you out there who might be interested.
