Operas which include Children
Dear List; Below is a list of Operas that include children. A few months ago many of you were excellent resources and I have been remiss in sending out the compilation. Thank you so much for your time! This spring I hope to extend my normal 'mini-opera unit' to include 5 scenes from the following operas: Hansel & Gretel, Carmen, Magic Flute, Street Scene and possbily one more. I will let you know how it goes!

Another interesting development. Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus and the Portland Symphonic Children's Choir and one other choir(?) commissioned Imant Raminsh to write an opera FOR children. I attended the premiere at Glen Ellyn and the piece is wonderful- the title is The Nightingale, and the performance was amazing. I believe the piece is published or will be published by Boosey. I may not have all the details straight, but this is a piece to check out. I think Emily Ellsworth and the other commissioners are hoping to develop a new genre of opera written for children. I believe there were about 2-3 adult roles in The Nightingale, the rest were children's parts and a lot of featuring of the chorus of children.
Hope this piques some interest!
