Masters of Music Programs Abroad?

I am currently teaching vocal music at an international school in Switzerland and would like to find a masters of music program in either choral conducting or music education that is offered entirely abroad. I would be interested in either an American university that has a program abroad or an English-speaking program through an international university.

After several attempts with web searches, I've come up short. Most of my inquiries return universities in the UK and I am more interested in studying on the continent or elsewhere internationally. Is anyone aware of a program like this?

Many thanks in advance for your help!
Katy

Hi Katy,

There's an MA in Kodaly Studies being offered by the Kodaly Institute in Kecskemet, Hungary, part of the Liszt Academy. It looks like a rigorous program, and the audition requires a lot of preparation.

Hope this helps.

Katy,

I understand that you have a prime interest in studying somewhere in mainland Europe, but I highly recommend that you check out the masters degree offerings at the Institute of Education (IoE), University of London.  In Europe, IoE is regarded in the same way we regard the Schools of Education at Harvard and Stanford--elite status.  Students from several continents and many countries take degrees there.  Professor Graham Welch, PhD, a close friend of mine, is Chair of Music Education and is well known internationally for his voice research (especially for research into children's voices) and for learning-teaching orientations that are at the leading edge of all the educational enterprises in the world.  The same can be said of Dr. Colin Durrant, PhD, Professor of Choral Music and Conducting, also a close friend and leading-edge choral conductor-teacher.

[Graham and I co-edited the comprehensive 3-volume, 18-author 'encyclopedia' of evidence-based voice knowledge titled, Bodymind and Voice: Foundations of Voice Education.  It literally covers just about everything you'd ever want to know about human voices.  info (and ordering) can be found at www.voicecarenetwork.org.  The 18 authors include three ENT physicians, an allergist-immunologist, an endocrinologist, an audiologist, a speech pathologist, a specialist voice educator (me), a child voice researcher (Graham), a certified Alexander Technique teacher, the only evidence-based researchers in male adolescent changing voices and female adolescent changing voices, a child voice specialist, a very early music education specialist, and four choral conductors/voice teachers.]

Other choral 'schools' of which I am aware are at the University of Helsinki (I've met the main choral prof there, but cannot now recall his name), and the world's only (to my knowledge) choral acoustician, Sten Ternström, is now at the University of Stockholm in Sweden. Sten and I are on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing, and about two years ago, he contributed an update article on research in choral acoustics to that online journal.  It can be downloaded at www.choralresearch.org

Check the website for the Estonian Academy of Music (in Tallinn).  Excellent program in choral conducting.  Not sure which of their programs are taught in English.

A slight correction to Leon's message: the choral program in Helsinki is at the Sibelius Academy, not the University of Helsinki. The Professor of Choir Conducting here is Matti Hyökki (Hyokki with an umlaut). www.siba.fi

Thank you for graciously "accuratizing" me, Jaakko. I appreciate it, and apologize for my misfiring memory banks.  This time, I'll write down the information about Matti Hyökki and the Sebelius Academy so that I can give all the right information in the future.

I met Matti in London several years ago when he was one of two featured conductors at a choral conducting conference that Colin Durrant had organized.  Matti is brilliant, of course. The other featured conductor was a colleague of mine, Axel Theimer.  I thought they worked very well together and complemented each other.  I learned a lot from both of them.
Be well,
Leon

Oops.  Misspelled Sibelius.  Woe is me, today.  Will the world ever forgive me?

Some years before I did my Master in Choral Education at Roehampton University in London but as you prefer an institute of continental Europe, you may want to check these two Bachelor programs in Choral Conducting in English language:

1) Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic)

and

2) University of Debrecen (Hungary)
