unpaid advertising on forums

I posted a response to a forum this morning - the question about whether university choirs are struggling - and my post was taken down by the moderator, apparently because in included an implicit criticism of the appropriateness of a professional solicitation posted as the first response to the question. I heard later from the original poster of the question that this particular professional has soliciations frequently on the forum boards, and that similar posts that question this practice are also taken down.

There definitely should be a place for people to post advertisements for their professional services, but imho there is enough volunteer pontification already on the boards (as opposed to responding specifically to the question posed without going into a condescending extended lecture) without allowed unpaid advertising to infect what are supposed to be collegial discussions.  I don't check the boards that often for these reasons, so I may be off-base on what the consensus policy is here, but it seems to me that the wrong posts are being taken down. - Tom Lloyd

This is an issue that moderators constantly struggle with, mostly in the context of composers recommending their own compositions. We feel we have to balance the desires of composers and other clinicians (who are also part of the choral community) with the needs of conductors and other readers of our forums; our policy has been to allow self-promoting responses as long as they're solidly on-topic in reply to a thread, or posted in the Classifieds or Announcements areas. We welcome input from all readers, however, regarding what policies would make the site more useful.

It seems the message you think got blocked was actually approved; maybe you just got impatient.

For the record, I have contacted Tom Lloyd offline, and we are discussing this privately. Tis an agreeable discussion, and I appreciate his willingness to share his experience of my posts.

All my best,

Tom
