Combined Middle & High School BoysDate: August 28, 2009
I'm considering a spring concert finale that would involve a combined piece including both my middle school boys (7th & 8th grade) and high school guys. Has anybody had experience with this and if so, what piece(s) worked the best?
Many thanks,

Jason - I have a setting of Bill Shakespeare's playful lyric It Was A Lover and His Lass for TB and piano which may work for you if the MS boys have changed voices. I wrote it for a production of As You Like It a couple years back and have been selling the original TB version as well as an adaptation for SSA which could also be done TBB. You may hear it in it's original version on my website at http://www.kallmancreates.com. Thanks - Daniel Kallman

Hi Jason! If you're interested in seeing a pdf score and
hearing an mp3 sound bite, then contact me at wdepue(a)woh.rr.com .
ChoralNet forms, like this one, will not accept these items. This
piece is a first-class opener for a concert.

BROTHERS in SINGING (TTBB / large and small shell drums or tambourines / large and small suspended cymbals / optional piccolo) is a fresh, new processional for men's chorus. Marching to the stage to begin a concert enables the audience to feel that it is a part of what is about to happen on stage. The hand-held percussion instruments and distinct vocal entries of this five-voice canon keep the interest in the sound intact. When on stage, the conductor will signal for all parts to abandon their current positions in the canon and skip directly to the homophonic climax at the end. The text is:
Brothers in singing are joined in their souls. They forever remember, with pride, when they march on together in friendship and honor. They know their songs lift up others who listen intently to the finest in music that great masters have written since history unfolded and blessed all mankind with their glorious creations and beautiful poems made for men who love to join as brothers in singing.
The vocal range is: c#-C#1. (duration indefinite) EASY

Jason:
You, your choir and your audience will really enjoy Ken Berg's Three Sea Chanteys. I used them with my 7-12 men's group to great success. Audiences love it, good closer. fun for the accompanist, and I know you've got a great one!
