Preferences on floor monitors and speakers

I have a small vocal jazz group and am replacing old floor monitors and speakers. I'd appreciate recommendations and "reviews" for replacement.
Also, pros and cons of using passive floor and speakers as opposed to powered, or a mix thereof.
Considering Yamaha MSR series, JBL's  MRX, PRX or PRX series, and new one out---QSC? $$$$. Anyone know or using them?
I know the bottom line is budget, but I'd like to offer maybe two levels of options in my budget proposal.
Appreciate prompt replies; deadline looming!

The speakers we use are Mackie SRM450s.  The equivalent Yamaha series and JBL series are fine also, but plan on spending around $700 for each.  You can find less expensive speakers, but in this market you really are getting what you paid for.  The cheaper stuff simply will not last, and you will get a poor sound out of it.  For floor monitors, if you get passive, then you have to buy an amp and rack case to power them.  It may end up costing you as much as two smaller powered monitors like the SRM350s.  Your best bet is to see if a sales rep will let you try out some speakers in your venue so you can hear the difference.

My school recently bought two passive speakers for $60 each, and although they work fine for presentations, the sound is bad to my trained ear.

Thanks, Scott. I should have mentioned that we have an amp and rack that was for the old monitors, which are passive. But good to hear your thoughts about Mackies. Some people absolutely love them, others not so much. But like you said, $$ is always the factor!
Your input helps!
