RICHARD COFFEY TO RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FROM CHORAL ARTS NEW ENGLAND

CONCORA is proud to announce that the Board of Directors of Choral Arts New England has unanimously selected Richard Coffeyas the 2009 recipient of the Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award is presented annually by Choral Arts New England to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to choral singing and its culture within New England. “We felt that Mr. Coffey clearly merited this recognition for his founding and distinguished leadership of CONCORA for 35 years (and counting),” says Peter Pulsifer, Board Chairman of Choral Arts New England, “for his work with other choruses, including The Hartford Chorale, and for all that he has done to educate singers and choral conductors and, generally, to improve the quality of choruses in Connecticut and beyond.”

Mr. Coffey is Artistic Director and Conductor of CONCORA, which he founded in 1974 as the first all-professional concert choir in the region. CONCORA performs a comprehensive choral repertoire year-round throughout southern New England both in its own subscription concerts and in collaboration with area orchestras, schools, and colleges. In particular, its presentations of the works of J.S. Bach are highly acclaimed. CONCORA is frequently heard on radio broadcasts and appears often by invitation at conventions and conferences of the American Guild of Organists, the American Choral Directors Association, and other distinguished organizations.

In 1999, under Mr. Coffey’s leadership, CONCORA established its annual Summer Festival, offering adult singers from the community and select high school and college singers an opportunity to join with CONCORA in rehearsing and performing great choral works. Under Mr. Coffey’s direction, CONCORA also established a professional quartet of voices, CONCORA-to-Go, whose program “Around the World in Music” brings multicultural choral singing into the region’s elementary schools and public libraries.

The Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 1996 to honor musicians who, over the course of their careers, have made significant contributions to the choral arts in New England over the course of their careers. Mr. Coffey joins a distinguished roster of past recipients, including Elliot Forbes, Lorna Cooke DeVaron, Daniel Pinkham, Florence Dunn, Allen Lannom, George Kent, Blanche Moyse, Mary Whitney Rowe, Roberta Humez, John Bavicchi, Alice Parker, Donald Teeters, Robert De Cormier, Crag Smith, and David Hoose.

The Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Mr. Coffey at a ceremony to be held in October in Hartford, Connecticut.

To celebrate Mr. Coffey’s achievement, CONCORA is throwing a party!Cocktails, canapés, conversation, cabaret, and of course, coffee! will be on offer on October 16 as CONCORA celebrates Mr. Coffey’s newest honor with a special evening of remembrances and music. Join our clever Master of Ceremonies (Edward Cumming, Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra) and other Coffey Roasters in a light-hearted and warm-spirited toast (and gentle roast) to Mr. Coffey. In between roasting and toasting (and probably some boasting), guests will hear from CONCORA On The Town! – that’s CONCORA’s fabulous new cabaret ensemble which makes its debut on October 11 in Hartford. To reserve your place at the Coffey Roast, contact CONCORA at 860-224-7500 or www.concora.org. Space is limited; please RSVP by October 12.
