Songs of the World

Thursday, November 12, 2009 8:00pm
Join the New York Choral Society Chamber Singers and special guests A Viva Voce for an evening of folk and national music from around the world, all in the intimate sanctuary of St. Joseph’s Church. Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 8:00 PM St. Joseph’s Church. With special guests A Viva Voce vocal quartet.
Anchoring the program are two sets of choral songs: Johannes Brahms' Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs), which provide the German Romantic's take on Hungarian poetry and Roma exoticism; and Aaron Copland's first set of Old American Songs, amorous, ardent, amusing and thoroughly American. Filling out the program are a trio of Italian Renaissance partsongs, two contemporary settings of poetry of Federico García Lorca by Carmen Cavallaro, and Nan-Chang Chien's I Am Flying, whose music and Mandarin poetry both depict a birds-eye view of the world's wonders.
The NYCS Chamber Singers is conducted by Michael Ciavaglia, NYCS Assistant Conductor. David Ralph, NYCS accompanist, serves as pianist.
